ESSAY QUESTIONS
Three of these questions will appear on the Final Exam. You will need to answer one of
them in as much detail as possible.

Question A: Discuss the major political and cultural changes in the U.S. beginning
with Reconstruction and going through 1900. Be sure to include as much detail as
possible about Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, Populism, and the various other
important changes of the period.

Question B: The role of the federal government changed dramatically in the U.S.
from 1898 to 1941. Discuss these changes in as much detail as possible. Be sure to
discuss America’s transition into a world power, the rise of the Progressives, the
major issues of the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression, and FDR’s New Deal.

Question C: Discuss the history of the U.S.’s involvement in the Cold War. Be sure to
include both domestic and international issues from 1943 to 1991.

Question D: In as much detail as possible, discuss the major social, political, and
cultural issues of the 1960s. Be sure to discuss more than just the African-American
Civil Rights Movement.
