Tutorial Week 7
Peer-review session 1
Portfolio Stage 2 (Week 7)
 Engage in a peer-review session and compete the
peer-review form.
 Grades will be rewarded for participating in the
peer-review session as both a writer and a peer-
reviewer; therefore, you must review your peer’s
paper while s/he reviews your paper. Make sure
you have sent a copy of the draft to your tutor.
 Following the class, you will be expected to take
on board the feedback from your peer and the
feedback from your tutor when redrafting the
assignment. This redraft will comprise Stage 3 of
the portfolio.

Preparation for the peer-review
process
 The aim is:
 to encourage you to seek and receive feedback
prior to handing in a final draft;
 to get you used to showing your work to
people regularly;
 to help you develop your ideas further and to
develop your thinking on the subject;
 to show you the benefit of discussing your
ideas with your colleagues (writing is a social
act);
 to help you develop you writing.

Notes for writers
 Define the type of feedback that you want and ask for
it: different types of feedback are relevant at different
stages of the writing process.
 Get your peer to focus on the things with which you
struggle most.
 Use the feedback to help you reflect on your work and
to help you clarifying your thoughts on the subject.
 Take notes on the comments made by your peer-
reviewer. Take time to write as you discuss your ideas
further.
 Discuss your process as well as the emerging product
(writing).

Notes for peer-reviewers
 You are giving feedback on a draft.
 Ask the writer what they would like you to focus
on when giving feedback on the draft.
 Read the draft with this in mind.
 Use the peer-review form to help guide your
reading and prompt the feedback you give.
 Ask the writer lots of questions about what they
have written. This will help them flesh out their
ideas and clarify their thinking.
 Give your peer time to take notes and to write.
