    This document describes the architecture for a smart card system used in a doctor's office. A smart card is inserted into a card reader connected to a client computer in the doctor's room. The client computer includes user interface components and uses RMI (remote method invocation) client components to communicate with RMI server applications running on a separate server computer. The server applications access databases and can create remote objects that the client can then invoke methods on through the RMI channel over TCP/IP.
