FADE IN:

1 EXT. HILLS. FOREST. MANALI -- MORNING

Sounds of forest. Sun winks behind the leaves.

A WHITE FEMALE (40, tall, casual). She seems to be European.


She stands waiting accompanied by LOCAL MALE (35, thin, short).

She shakes a bit in the early morning chill and she rubs her
gloved hands together.

WHITE FEMALE
Are you sure they are going to come?

LOCAL MALE
My source. Very reliable madam. I deal
with them. I know them.

WHITE FEMALE
And they told you they are going to take us
to marijuana plantations?

LOCAL MALE
Look madam. They worship their ganja plant.
Dope. They don't like outsiders. They
take us to...their home...village. Then
all around you see...dope.

WHITE FEMALE
But the recent papers said that the
government destroyed all the dope?

The Local Male laughs.

LOCAL MALE
White people. Foolish people madam. Indian
police. Very clever. They burn big dope
field. But that is very little here. Up
in mountains there is lots of dope. All
protected.

WHITE PEOPLE
Protected?

LOCAL MALE
By village people. And their Italian and
Israelis friends. Dangerous people. But
my friends. Still I don't tell them that
you from magazine. You also don't say.

The White Female nods.

Around them, in the forest they hear feet walking over fallen
leaves.

LOCAL MALE (CONT'D)


Them coming. You got money ready?

The White Female nods again.

From bushes a FEW MEN materialize, all wrapped in blankets. The


Locale Male smiles and greets them. He goes up to them and talks.

A men eye the woman from distance. She holds her stance, trying
to appear at ease.

In a SUDDEN MOVE one of the men removes his blanket and hits the
local on head with a Beretta 9MM steel. The Local falls. The
Female runs.

The men start chasing her, and catch up immediately as she


struggles to find her way through the forest.

They surround her. Catch hold of her. And then they throw a
blanket over her face.

Opening credits begin with music. A 30 sec V.O. announces brief


facts about Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

2 INT. CAR -- DAY

Usmaan is behind the wheel. Sitting next to him is the Old Man
from Manipur. His daughter, BINATA SARKAR, is sitting behind
them, staring out of the window.

3 EXT. OUTSIDE REHABILITATION CENTER -- DAY

The car stops outside the Rehab. Usmaan opens the door and gets
off. The Rehab manager ROGER DAVID (62, gentle, cordial, bald
and thin but active)comes down the steps to greet them.

MR. DAVID
Usmaan.

USMAAN
Mr. David. Hello.

They shake hands. Usmaan turns to introduce the people behind


him.

USMAAN (CONT'D)
Yeh Mr. Sarkar. Aur unki beti. Binata
Sarkar.

MR. DAVID
(greeting both of
them)
Come inside. Please.

4 INT. REHAB. DAVID'S OFFICE -- DAY

Everybody's seated. David behind his desk. And Usmaan, Binata


and her father in front of him.

Mr. David smiles and puts some forms on the desk.

MR. DAVID
(smiles)
Routine paperwork Mr. Sarkar. Family
information. Education background etc.

Usmaan picks up the papers.

USMAAN
Binata yahan meri zimmedari par rahegi Mr.
David. Forms main bhar doonga.

BINATA
(almost snaps)
Mere father ko likhna-padhna aata hai sir.
Aur meri zimmedari main khud utha sakti
hoon.

MR. SARKAR
Binata. Shut up. Aise kaise baat karta
hai.

USMAAN
It's ok Mr. Sarkar.
(smiles)
Forms aap bhar dijiye. Sign main kar doonga.

MR. DAVID
(to Binata)
Binata bete Usmaan aur iska mother Hannah
ko hum saalon se jaante hain. Hannah is
active social worker aur Usmaan bhi maa par
gaya hai. He has helped lot of people by
bringing them here.

BINATA
Do we look like in need of 'Social Work'
Mr. David. Hunh. Kaun lagte hain hum?
Refugee? Bhikhari? Orphans? Apahij? Jo
aap hamara Social Work karenge. We don't
need your damn help.

Usmaan looks at David and smiles.

USMAAN
Actually Mr. David Binata ko hamari help ki
zaroorat nahin hai. Aapko pata hai she is
topper in Mathematics and Computer Science
from Manipur university?

BINATA
Aapko pata hai Mr. David Manipur hai kahan?
Mizoram ke upar ya neeche. Nagaland ke left
ya right.
(MORE)

BINATA (CONT'D)
Kuch log toh mujhe yeh bhi pooch chuke hain
ki China mein hai ya Bhutan mein.

MR. SARKAR
Lekin sabse pehle dhokha toh usne hi diya
na jo Manipur se yahan laya tha. Bola tha
UK bhejega tujhe...

BINATA
...UK. India. Humein toh dono hi jagah
outsider samjha jaata...Foreigner...

MR. SARKAR
Binata...

MR. DAVID
Mr. Sarkar it's ok. Kar lene dijiye usse
gussa. Yahan...
(smiles)
...Azaadi hai. Yeh jail nahin hai. Aaiye -
aapko apna yeh chota sa ghar dikhate hain.

Usmaan joins in smiling and leaves his seat just like Mr. David.
Binata and Mr. Sarkar follow.

5 EXT. TEA SHACK. EN-ROUTE MANALI -- DAY

Bikes. Bullets, Yamaha, Hero-Honda, all types are parked outside


the tea-stall. Cars and jeeps are there too.

Many tourists from varied ethnicities are walking in and walking


out.

6 INT. TEA SHACK. EN-ROUTE MANALI -- DAY

A TABLE FULL OF ISRAELIS. They are talking loudly.

ON A NEARBY CHAIR Mahendra is sitting with his legs propped on


second chair. His head is thrown back and his eyes closed.

Brinda comes walking to the table where Mahendra is sitting.


She is rubbing imported moisturizer on her arms. Seems she's
just washed her face. She now looks one with the crowd.

Brinda pulls the chair from beneath Mahendra's feet. Mahendra


wakes with a start. Brinda puts that chair aside, picks another
one and sits down.

BRINDA
Kaam karne aaye ho ya neend poori karne?

MAHENDRA
(stretching his
arms)
Kaam hi kar raha hoon. Aankein bandh hain.
Kaan khule.

Mahendra nods in the direction of Israelis talking loudly on the


table. Brinda looks at them and the Mahendra.

BRINDA
Bahut tarakki kar li tumne do din mein.
Kabhi Japanese se baat karte ho. Kabhi
Israelis ki baatein sunte-samajhte ho...

MAHENDRA
Itna bhi mushkil nahin hai. Dhyan se suno
baar-baar yeh log yeh hi shabd bol rahe
hain...

Brinda returns her attention to Israelis. Listens closely.


When she looks back at Mahendra, he nods.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
A-Rif. Kif. A-rif. Kif.

BRINDA
Kya hai yeh?

MAHENDRA
Arabi hai. Rif. Pahadi ilaaka hai Morocco
mein. Kif. Rif ki pahadon pe paida hone
wali Hashish. Aapas mein behes kar rahe
hain ki maal kahan ka zyada achcha hai.
Manali ka. Ki Morocco ka.

BRINDA
Tumhe kaisa pata?

MAHENDRA
Hai ek dost Bombay mein - jiska Arabiyon ke
saath uthna-baithna hai. Thoda-bahut usne
sunn-sunn ke seekha. Thoda-bahut mujhe
sikhaya.

BRINDA
Tumhare dost bhi hain?

MAHENDRA
Hain na. Friend bhi hain. Girlfriend bhi.

BRINDA
(almost about to
laugh)
Tumhari?

MAHENDRA
Yakeen nahin hota toh inhi logon se pooch
lo.

Mahendra nods in the direction of Israelis. Brinda looks at


them and looks back and Mahendra.

BRINDA
Mujhe pata tha. Tumhari girlfriend nahin
hai.

MAHENDRA
Hai. Yeh log wohi toh baat kar rahe hain.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
Main so raha tha toh yeh log tumhari taraf
ishara karke bol rahe the 'Iss becahre ki
girlfriend isko sone bhi nahin deti. Raat
bhar.'

Brinda suddenly looks alarmed.

BRINDA
Ho hi nahin sakta.

MAHENDRA
Tumhe kaisa pata. Tumhe thode hi Arabi
aati. Mujhe aati hai. Tumhe toh bas English
aati hai.

BRINDA
Do shabd Arabi ke kya seekh liye tumne...

MAHENDRA
Do nahin chaar. Rif. Kif. Raat. Bechara.

Brinda picks a DIRTY SPOON from the table and throws at Mahendra.

Mahendra ducks. Spoon flies off to other table.

Everyone around looks at them. Mahendra shrugs sheepishly to


the crowd.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
(smiling to crowd
in general)
No worry. She always fighting. Always
beating. Angry Young Woman.

BRINDA
Mahendra shut-up.

The others around start to giggle and look away. Brinda, pissed,
pushes Mahendra's chair.

Mahendra falls off, doubled-up with laughter.

Brinda picks up her bag from the floor and rushes out. Mahendra
is busy laughing.

7 INT. SESSIONS COURT -- DAY

A DEFENSE LAWYER picks up DOCUMENTS from his desk and walks to


the witness stand. The witness is Kartik

The defense lawyer hands a copy to Kartik. And then passes a


copy to the Judge.

DEFENSE LAWYER
(to Kartik)
Yeh aapke panchnaame ki copy hai. Jo aapne
Khaled Quereshi ko arrest karne ke baad
bhara tha.

Khaled's face. He's damn good at looking innocent and vulnerable.

Kartik looks at the panchnama and nods.

KARTIK
Yes Your Honor.

DEFENSE LAWYER
Aapne apne panchname mein likha hai ki
accused ko arrest karte wakt koi religious
feeling hurt nahin ki gayi thi? Kisi bhi
tarah ki dharmik bhavna ko thes nahin
pahunchi thi?

KARTIK
Yes. Yeh sahi hai.

DEFENSE LAWYER
Toh phir ek mamuli se insaan ko arrest karne
ke liye aapko police back up kyun bulana
pada?

Kartik looks at the judge.

KARTIK
Your Honor - accused ne arrest ke wakt
jhootha shor macha ke public ko ikkatha kar
liya tha. Jisme se kuch log bina yeh jaane
ki humne isse contraband ke saath pakda hai -
mujhse aur Superintendent Usmaan se behes
karne lag gaye. Haatha-pai par utar aaye.
Isiliye humein local police station se help
leni padi.

DEFENSE LAWYER
Toh aapke hisaab se NCB ki kisi activity se
kisi ke religious feeling hurt nahin hue
the?

KARTIK
Koi religious feeling hurt nahin hue the.

DEFENSE LAWYER
That's all. Next witness Your Honor...

Kartik steps down from the stand. As he walks back to the


Prosecutor he sees A WOMAN in veil raising hands heavenward.

Kartik gives a look in Khaled's direction and sits down. Defense


Lawyer in the meantime has announced who his new witness is.

KARTIK
(aside to prosecutor)
Who's that woman? Hearing mein pachaas
baar haath upar neeche kar chuki hai.

PROSECUTOR
Maa hai Khaled ki. Dua maang rahi hai bete
ke liye.

In the stand the next witness comes. He's the Young Man (Episode
8) who had attacked Usmaan and Kartik.

DEFENSE LAWYER
(to new witness)
Tum iss ladke ko pehchante ho - jo wahan
bench par baitha hai?

YOUNG MAN
Haan. Pehchante hain.

DEFENSE LAWYER
Tumhara rishtedaar hai? Ya dost hai?

YOUNG MAN
Nahin. Isse police ne hamare area mein
pakda tha. Buri tarah maarne-peetne ke
baad.

PROSECUTOR
(stands)
I object Your Honor.

Judge looks at the Young Man.

JUDGE
Aapse jitna poocha jaye - utna bolo.

The Young Man nods.

DEFENSE LAWYER
Kya hua tha us waktjab police ne iss ladke
ko pakadne ki koshish ki?

YOUNG MAN
Pehle toh sir...woh...yeh sahab ne apne
gaadi se takkar maarke iss ladke ko gira
diya...woh rone laga...zor-zor se...aur
kehne laga ki 'el musalmaan ko jaanboojh ke
pakad rahe hain.' Toh hum log sab hai na
baju mein khade the...

DEFENSE LAWYER
Hum log matlab?

YOUNG MAN
Sir main...mere
dots...Naresh...Dimpy...Mustakh...Hum log
sab wahan paan wale ke udhar khade the...

DEFENSE LAWYER
Jab tumne...aur tumhare doston ne dekha ki
Police ne...car se takkar maarke iss ladke
ko gira diya hai tab tumne kya kiya?

YOUNG MAN
Hum aagey aaye sir...baat karne ko...pehle
yeh sahab the
(points at Kartik)
Toh inhone humko gaali-waali nikala...phir
ek doosra sahab aaya...humne usko poocha
sir...bas ki kya yeh musalmaan hai isiliye

ho jaata....kamana padta hai..' Aisa kuch
bhi toh...

DEFENSE LAWYER
Your Honor I'd like to remind the court -

mein baat kar raha hai jo Investigating
Officer ke saath arrest ke wakt present

Haan toh...un sahab ne bola...ki 'naam Wasim

YOUNG MAN
Haan sir.

The Prosecutor stands again.

PROSECUTOR
Your Honor I'd also like to remind the court
yeh witness NCB Superintendent Usmaan Ali
Malik ke baare mein baat kar raha hai. Jo
khud ek Musalmaan hain...

The Judge leans forward. Looking bugged.

JUDGE
Can we please stick to the facts of the
case? Both of you. Kaun kis religion ka
hai yahan yeh behes nahin hai. Behes hai
ki Arresting Officers ne proper procedure
follow kiya. ya nahin.

The Prosecutor sits.

DEFENSE LAWYER
That'll be it Your Honor. No more questions.
I'd like to call the next witness.

JUDGE
One more question about the religion and
I'll throw the file right out of this room.

DEFENSE LAWYER
I'm sorry Your Honor. But...I'm questioning
the panchnama filed. Not anybody's religion.
Aur agar panchname mein yeh jhooth likha
hai ki arrest ke wakt koi...religi...
(stops himself
from saying the
word.)
there's a column there Your Honor...

JUDGE
Thank you Mr. Tripathi. But I'm familiar
with the panchnama. Mujhe pata hai kaunse
columns hote hain.

DEFENSE LAWYER
I'm sorry Your Honor. Main bas yeh kehna
chahta tha ki jis panchname mein ek
information jhooth ho sakti hai - usme ek
se zyada informations bhi galat ho sakti
hain. And I'd like that benefit of doubt
for the accused.

JUDGE
Are you calling the next witness?

DEFENSE LAWYER
Yes Your Honor. Doctor Hari Singh.

Khaled's mother wipes her tears.

CUT TO:

8 INT. STD-PCO -- DAY

Shutter is down. Ansari is inside alone, on the phone.

ANSARI
Pakda aapka aadmi gaya. Isme hamari kya
galti hai...

INTERCUT:

9 INT. DUBAI AIRPORT -- MORNING

Musa is walking with his luggage trolley into the airport.

MUSA
Pakda sirf aadmi nahin gaya Naved. Paisa
bhi gaya.

ANSARI
Woh paisa hum logon ne mehnat karke nikala
tha. Hifazat se aapke aadmi ke haath mein
pahuncha diya tha. Usne gina. Uske baad
meri zimmedari kahatam.

MUSA
Tune hi yahan aake kaha tha na ki maal agar
mere area mein pakda jayega toh zimmedari
meri. Zubeydah bhai ka kehna hai ki maal
ka matlab sirf maal nahin hota. Paisa bhi
toh hota hai.

Ansari is quiet at the other end. Listening. The whole thing


dawning on him.

ANSARI
(tone gets intense)
Main apne bachche ko school se nikalne ka
intezaam kar chuka hoon. Biwi-bachchon aur
Wasim ka naya passport nikaal chuka hoon.

Musa stops with his trolley. Sighs.

MUSA
(understanding
Ansari's
predicament)
Naved. Maine hamesha tera achcha chaha
hai. Lekin baat saaf hai. Bambai tera
adda. Lekin yahan tu baharwala hai. Aur
baharwala yahan aake rahe - khud ko mehfooz
kare. Tarakki kare. Yeh koi nahin chahta.
Jo yahan zamane se baitha kha raha hai woh
jab chahe game ka rule badal sakta hai. Jo
baharwala hai usse baar-baar apna hunar
saabit karna padta hai.

Ansari listens, jaw clenched.

MUSA (CONT'D)
Main rakhta hoon Naved. Flight announce ho
gayi hai. Wahan woh log bhadke baithe hain.
Unhe hi manane Sierra-Leone ja raha hoon.
Apna khyal rakh. Wapas Dubai laut ke phone
karta hoon. Zubeydah bhai nuksaan bhoolne
ko taiyaar hain. Isse hi ehsaan samajh le
unka.

ANSARI
Maine ehsaanon par dhanda nahin khada kiya.
Paseena bole paseena. Khoon bole khoon.
Sab yahan ki sadkon pe bahaya hai.

MUSA
Apni gali mein sab sher hain Naved. Tu
wahan. Zubeydah bhai yahan. Apni gali
chodd ke doosre ki gali aana hai toh paseena
baha ya khoon - us-se chamkane doosron ke
jute hi padte hain.

Ansari slowly lowers the phone down. His hand firmly places the
receiver on the hood. His fists remains tightly holding the
receiver.

10 INT. CHEAP LODGE. MANALI -- DAY

Mahendra and Brinda walk into the lodge. MANAGER greets them at
the reception.

MAHENDRA
Room?

MANAGER
Kona milega. Corner. Corner sone ke liye.
To sleep.

Mahendra gets it. But feigns ignorance. From his bag he takes
out his Hindi phrase book and pretends to look for the word.

Brinda impatiently waits for him to finish his hamming.

MAHENDRA
Aah. Corner. No room.

MANAGER
No room. And shukr thank god bhagwaan ka
ki room sab bhar gaye hain. Kona chahiye?
Want corner?

Mahendra pretends to refer to the phrasebook again. Tired of


antics, Brinda butts in.

BRINDA
Ok. Which 'kona?'

Manager comes out from behind the counter.

MANAGER
Follow me.

Manager starts walking inside. Brinda follows him with her


backpack. Mahendra follows them.

BRINDA
Why no rooms?

MANAGER
Arre meri gori chidya tum log sawaal bahut
poochte ho...

Flabbergasted Brinda looks at Mahendra. Mahendra hides his smirk


and gestures Brinda - 'ask ask ask.'

BRINDA
(to Manager)
What?

MANAGER
Kuch nahin meri maa.
(turns politely)
Lots of tourist arrive. Dher saare. All
room full last week. Phir dher saari police
aayi. Lots of police.

BRINDA
Police?

MANAGER
Ganje ko aag lagane. Aag hamare business
ko lag gayi. To burn ganja plants.
Understand?

Brinds nods.

MANAGER (CONT'D)
Good. Police came. Tourist run away.
Darr ke bhaag gaye saare tourist. Some
gaye Manikaran. Some gaye Kasol. Sabke
paas ganja hota hai na. Upar se khali kamre
policewalon ko dene pade. Lo aa gaya tumhara
kona. Your corner.

He gestures to a small corner, place below a stairway, where two


people can crouch easily.

BRINDA
Thank you.

MANAGER
Kamai karni hai mem. Paisa nikaal.

BRINDA
(tough time feigning
ignorance)
What?

MANAGER
(smiles politely)
Advance madam.

Brinda unzips her bag and takes her pouch out. She hands some
money to the Manager. The manager starts walking and counting
at the same time.

When the manager is away, Brinda and Mahendra dump their backpacks
on the floor and sits down. Their backs resting against their
backpacks.

They are not the only ones who've been given a corner. There
are others around.

The place is full of activity. Lost of foreigners walking in,


walking out. Climbing up, coming down.

Mahendra eyes a group of young girls who are busy chatting away
in another corner, sharing notes from Lonely Planet books.

Brinda sees what Mahendra is looking at.

BRINDA
Unme se koi nahin patne wali tumse. Dekhne
ka koi faayda nahin.

Mahendra looks at Brinda. The look on his face is somewhat


serious.

MAHENDRA
Gaanje ka yeh Mahakumbh dekh raha hoon jo
har saal Kullu-Manali mein lagta hai. Har
saal yahan duniya bhar se log aate hain.
Nirvana bhari chillum dhoondne. Phir waapis
apne desh jaate hain. Doston ko email karte
hain. Internet pe article likhte hain.
Kahan rehna hai. Kahan se gaanja khareedna
hai. Kitne mein khareedna hai. Phir woh
sab information sunke - agle saal aur zyada
log aate hain. Mela laga hua hai yahan...

BRINDA
Jab mela dekh chuko toh batana. Humein
Khemka Prasad ko milne jaana hai. Anuj ne
jiss informer ka address diya tha.

MAHENDRA
Tumhe sach-much Anuj par kaafi trust hai.

BRINDA
Thank god. 'Trust' toh theek se pronounce
kar lete ho...

MAHENDRA
Meri English ka mazaak uda rahi ho?

BRINDA
Doosron ka mazaak udana tumhari specialty
hai. Meri nahin. Main toh bas hairaan
hoon ki 'trust' word tumhari dictionary
mein exist bhi karta hai.

Mahendra looks at the phrasebook/dictionary he is holding.


Smiles.

BRINDA (CONT'D)
Aa rahe ho?

MAHENDRA
(nods)
Tumhare saath-saath. Jahan tum le chalo.

She shakes her head and lifts her backpack. He stands after
her.

CUT TO:

11 INT. REHAB -- DAY

Mr. David is giving a tour to Usmaan and his guests. As they


walk around.

MR. DAVID
Hamara program self-help par based hai.
Humne ab-tak bees hazaar chemical defendants
ko treat kiya hai. Jise mein se ek ko bhi
Cold Turkey nahin hua...

USMAAN
(looks at Mr. Sarkar)
Cold Turkey drugs na lene par hone wale
withdrawal symptoms ko kehte hain.

MR. DAVID
(continues)
...Hamara success rate 90 percent hai- kyunki
hum ek time pe fifteen addicts se zyada ko
admit nahin karte...

They walk around the activity room. There are T.T. Tables and
Billiard Tables inside. Carrom Boards etc. are there in another
corner.

MR. DAVID (CONT'D)


Apart from all this we also have a Yoga
teacher. Iss program clarification
counseling ke baad...Binata...tume Motivation
Strengthening Counseling diya jayega...I'll
introduce you to the counselor...

BINATA
Main apke kisi counseling mein interested
nahin hoon Mr. David. Jail nahin bheja
yahan le aaye. Kuch farak nahi hai iss
jagah mein aur jail mein.

Usmaan looks at Binata.

USMAAN
(can't help it)
Kitni jail dekhi hain tumne Binata.

They all stop.

Binata looks way. Avoiding Usmaan's gaze.

BINATA
Bhijwa dijiye. Itna dekha hai life mein.
Jail bhi dekh loongi.

USMAAN
Kuch nahin dekha tumne.

BINATA
Oh... matlab meri aaj-tak life bekaar gayi.
22 saal. Mujhe phir paida hoke shuru se
jeena padega....

Mr. David interrupts politely.

MR. DAVID
Ah...we have a speak-up meeting today.
Jahan addicts pan drug choddne ka experience
share karte hain. Main check karke aata
hoon - if we can make some space for you to
see...

Mr. David leaves.

Binata looks at Usmaan.

BINATA
Do din mein bhaag jaoongi yahan se.

USMAAN
(smiles)
Maths aur Computer science ke alawa - race
mein bhi topper ho kya. 'Bhaag jaoongi...'

MR. SARKAR
Usmaan sir tumhara help karne ka koshish
karta hai idiot.

BINATA
(scoffs)
Help...

YOUNG MAN (O.S.)


Mr. Usmaan Ali.

Usmaan turns. Sees a Young Man walking towards him, wearing an


expensive jeans and t-shirt.

USMAAN
Hi Samir.

Samir comes forward and shakes Usmaan's hand.

USMAAN (CONT'D)
Yahan kaise?

SAMIR

Wasim turns a bit, looks at the open door. He slowly walks to

Ansari now turns and looks at Wasim. Wasim comes forward, closer

gaya tha. Darwaze khule chodd ke kaam ki

Wasim sits down, closer to Ansari's feet and rests his hands on
Ansari's knees.

WASIM (CONT'D)

Wasim spreads his hand in front of Ansari.

WASIM (CONT'D)
Aap mauka dekar dekhiye.

Ansari looks at the open hand and then at Wasim's face. Then he
picks up keys from the table and puts it in Wasim's hands.

ANSARI
Gaadi nikaal.

Wasim closes his fingers around the key and smiles. He nods,
stands quickly and walks to the door.

On his way out he closes the door.

Ansari looks at his drawer. Opens it.

A GUN is lying inside. Ansari looks at it long enough. The gun


stares back at him from the drawer.

Ansari pulls a file out from below the gun and closes the drawer.

14 EXT. OUTSIDE A SMALL HOUSE. MANALI -- AFTERNOON

A LOCAL WOMAN opens the door. Brinda and Mahendra are looking
at her.

BRINDA
Namaste...yeh pata...yahan ka hai...

She hands a slip to the woman. The woman returns the slip.

WOMAN
Mujhe padhna nahin aata...

Brinda takes the slip back.

BRINDA
Uh...hum...Khemka Prasad ko dhoondh rahe
hain...hamare dost ne pata diya tha unka...

WOMAN
Idhar koi Khemka Prasad nahin hai...

The red evening sun peeps out from behind the hills.

Last few shreds of sunlight remain in the sky. Distant huts


have started twinkling in the dark.

Brinda comes out of a lane. Her face hanging with disappointment.

Mahendra is waiting for her at a corner, sitting on a rock with


newspaper folded on his lap.

When their eyes meet, Brinda just shakes her head. Mahendra
nods with understanding.

MAHENDRA
(softly)
Khemka Prasad naam ka koi informer nahin
hai Brinda. Anuj par bharosa karna bandh
karo.

Brinda sits down next to him.

BRINDA
(nods slowly)
Shayad nahin hai. Tum ek baar phir jeet
gaye mujhse. Main haari.

Mahendra shakes his head.

She looks at him, puzzled. Mahendra takes the newspaper from


his lap and puts it in her hand.

He gestures her to open it. Brinda slowly lifts the newspaper


and opens it.

The headline on the page says ARREST OF NIGERIAN DIPLOMAT IN


DELHI. Brinda's eyes run over the article.

25 INT/EXT. SMALL DHABA. MANALI -- NIGHT

The place is almost empty. In an isolated corner Mahendra is


sitting alone, staring at the glass of tea lying in front of
him.

Brinda walks into the place. She walks straight to Mahendra and
sits down opposite him.

None says a thing for a while. Then -

BRINDA
Maine soch liya hai...

MAHENDRA
Haan. Kabhi-kabhi yeh kaam bhi kar lena
chahiye.

BRINDA
Kiya. Aaj kiya. Aur yeh tay kiya ki main
Usmaan sir aur Krishnan sir ko sab saaf-
saaf bata doongi. Uske baad woh mujhe
nikalna chahen toh unki marzi...

MAHENDRA
Bhai fauj mein tha na tumhara?

Brinda looks at Mahendra. Nods.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
Suna hai wahan sikhate hain ki mara fauji
kisi kaam ka nahin hota.

Brinda nods again.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
Toh tum kyun marna chahti ho?

BRINDA
Imaandari dikhana chahti hoon.

MAHENDRA
Kisne dikahi hai jo tumhe shauk chada hai...

BRINDA
Mujhe toh laga tha tumhe khushi hogi agar
main NCB se chali jaoongi. Tumhi ne kaha
tha na - crime aur police. Aurton ke bas
ka nahin hai. Ghusengi toh pitengi.

MAHENDRA
Khush hota agar tumhe aise hi nikaal diya
jaata. Lekin DRI ka officer hamare
department ke officer ko maar ke jaye...yeh
main nahin dekh sakta

BRINDA
Toh kya karoge...wohi jo unhone mere saath
kiya...

MAHENDRA
Tumhare saath nahin. Unhone NCB ke saath
kiya. Hum sab ke saath. Vashist ko maloom
hoga ki tum nayi ho. Isiliye faayda uthaya
usne...

Brinda listens. Her head lowered.

MAHENDRA (CONT'D)
Ansari ka naam sunn ke unki laar tapak gayi
hogi. Ab humein Ansari tak unse pehle
pahunchna hai.

BRINDA
Kaise?

MAHENDRA
Hum yahan hain. Raja bhi yahin-kahin hai.
Shuruat karne ke liye isse achchi jagah
nahin mil sakti.

BRINDA
Khemka Prasad toh mila nahin. Raja kaise
milega?

MAHENDRA
Yeh mandi hai. Aur Raja thok vyapari.
Wholesale trader. Woh yahin milega. Gaanje
ki mandi mein.

BRINDA
Aur maal kahan bhara rakha hai yeh kaise
pata chalega?

MAHENDRA
Agar gud ki dhali dhoondhni hai toh cheetiyon
ki line ko follow karo.

BRINDA
Cheetiyaan?

MAHENDRA
Tourist. Jo yahan ganje ke mahakumbh mein
snaan karne aate hain.

BRINDA
Cheetiyaan chote-chote katre lekar chali
jaati hain. Bulk nahin.

MAHENDRA
Jo cheetiyon tak katre pahunchate hain woh
phir aage nadi ka rasta dikhayenge.

BRINDA
Aur apni behti Ganga mein woh humein kyun
haath dhone denge?

MAHENDRA
Kyunki unhe kaunsa gangajal ghar rakhna
hai. Bechna hi hai na. Hum khareeddar
bann jayenge.

Brinda laughs.

BRINDA
Baatein karke seat lena aur baat hai. Kisi
ke gaanje bhare godown ka darwaza khulwana
alag.

Mahendra smiles.

MAHENDRA
Darwaza khulwane wali ticket ke paisa de
sakta hoon.

BRINDA
Aur paisa aayega kahan se. Usmaan sir money
order karenge?

MAHENDRA
(shakes his head)
Mera Provident Fund hai na. Mere bag mein...

Brinda looks again, puzzled.

26 EXT. ISOLATED LANE. MANALI -- NIGHT

Shops around are shut. Nobody is out on the streets. Under a


lamp-post Mahendra unzips his backpack.

There are big bundles of notes inside.

Brinda's eyes open up as she sees it. Mahendra zips up the bag.

BRINDA
Yeh kahan se laye?

MAHENDRA
Tumne toh dekha hai mujhe. Pinto ki raid
ke baad niklate hue...

SUDDEN CUT TO:

27 EXT. RAID SITE -- NIGHT. FLASHBACK (EPISODE 2)

Mahendra finds some cash. Pockets it. Brinda is looking at


him.

BACK TO:

EXT. ISOLATED LANE. MANALI -- NIGHT

Brinda is looking at him.

MAHENDRA
Uss raid. Aur uske jaise kai raids mein
mile cash se banaya hai yeh Provident Fund.
Sarkar se jitna milta hai poora kahan padta
hai. Informers ko dene ke liye. Drugs
khareed-khareed ke gang ke andar tak
pahunchne ke liye.

Brinda nods.

BRINDA
Maine jab tumhe nikalte dekha tha toh kuch
aur hi samjha tha.

MAHENDRA
Pata hai. Par chalta hai. Haan batana mat
kisi ko. Kartik ko bhi nahin pata iss baare
mein.

BRINDA
Toh mujhe bhi kyun bataya?

MAHENDRA
(winks)
Kyunki tumhari Vashisht wali baat sirf mujhe
pata hai. Isiliye jaanta hoon tum meri
shikayat karne ki galti nahin karogi.

Brinda nods with understanding. Mahendra smiles.

28 INT. FRUIT PRODUCT MANUFACTURER'S PLANT. MANALI -- NIGHT

The whole set up looks like equipped for concealing hash packs
in mixed-fruit-jam jars or processed pineapple tins.

Raja and his local contact (Episode 8) are looking at all the
hash that is lying around, wrapped in plastic foils to keep it
fresh.

MAN
Maine kaha tha na bahut maal hai. Lekin
pada-pada sadd raha hai. Le lo.

RAJA
Maine bhi kaha tha commission bees percent
hoga.

MAN
Ab rate pe kya jhagda karna. Bees toh bees
sahi. Maal toh nikle.

RAJA
Kitna time lagega dabbe bhar ke truck mein
load karne mein?

MAN
Aap yeh maal lete ho toh bolo...kal se teen
shift shuru kar deta hoon workers ki...din-
raat dabbe bharenge toh do din mein ho
jayega...

Raja nods. He walks up to nearby table and rests his briefcase


on top of it. He opens the briefcase and takes a bundle of notes
out and then another.

He hands both the bundles to Raja.

RAJA
Advance.

The Man nods.

MAN
Kal aa jaiye...aapke saamne bharva doonga...

Raja nods.

MAN (CONT'D)
Aapke rehne ka intezaam yahan peeche gaanv
mein kiya hai. Neeche hotel tak jayenge
toh subah aane mein time lagega...

RAJA
Time jitna bache tuna achcha...chal...

Man gestures 'this way.' Raja follows him to a door.

The Man opens the door.

CUT TO:

29 INT. MANUFACTURING PLANT. ANOTHER SECTION -- NIGHT

Raja comes out of the door. The Man walks out after him. In
one corner of this room Raja spots two people squatting on the
floor. There's a cloth around their eyes, and their hands and
legs are tied.

They're the local male and the white female from the beginning
of this episode.

Raja looks at the Man. The Man nods 'I'll talk outside.'

Raja and the Man walk on.

30 EXT. OUTSIDE MANUFACTURING UNIT -- NIGHT

Raja and the Man come out. The Man locks the door from outside.
A night watchman nods at the them respectfully.

Raja and The Man walk away. When they're at a distance.

MAN
Yeh firangan - tourist bann ke ghoom rahi
thi Manali mein. Asal mein kisi akhbaar ya
magazine mein kaam karti hai. Likhna chahti
thi ki police ne ganje ki fasal poori tarah
se khatam nahin ki. Aur saabit karne ke
liye photo lena chahti thi...

RAJA
Aur uske saath aadmi kaun hai?

MAN
Woh. Yahan do gaanv door rehta hai. Khemka
Prasad naam hai uska. Dikhane ke liye hotel
mein waiter ka kaam karta hai. Lekin hai
khabari.

RAJA
Police ka?

MAN
(shakes his head)
Hamara tha. Police ki movement ki khabar
apne ko deta tha. Kabhi koi police party
agar ganje ke khet ki taraf aati hai toh
uske gaanv se pehle hi dikh jaati hai.
Hamare liye kaam karte-karte police aur
akhbaar walon ka khabari kab baan gaya pata
hi nahin chala. Jab tak iss mem ko yahan
laane ki koshish nahin ki isne...

RAJA
Toh zinda kyun hain ab-tak? Dono?

MAN
Ek toh season ki tezi. Upar se aas-paas
police ki garmi bahut hai. Jaldi hi Beas
mein milenge dono.
(smiles)
Yahan waise bhi Beas nadi mein se bahut
laashein nikalti hain. Aur koi poochta
nahin hai.

31 EXT. STREET. BOMBAY -- LATE NIGHT

A CAR idles along the isolated curb. The shops around are shut.
Not much activity on the road.

A taxi drives up, close to the car. The door of the taxi opens
and someone gets off from the taxi and enters the car.

The taxi moves away.

32 INT. CAR -- LATE NIGHT

Jagdale is sitting behind the wheel. In the passenger seat Selva


closes the door.

Selva looks around nervously. Jagdale looks at Selva.

JAGDALE
Kya Selva - milta nahin aaj-kal tu?

SELVA
Woh hai na NCB wala. Mahendra. Usne bahut
garmi kar rakhi hai.

JAGDALE
Mahendra? Woh kya chahta hai tujhse?

SELVA
Chahta hai Ansari ke maal ki koi khabar
apne ko mile toh hum usse bataein.

JAGDALE
Tu mera khabari hai. Samjha.

SELVA
Main pehle Ansari ka dushman hoon. Uske
baad uska khabari hoon jo mera aur Raghav
bhai ka protection kar sake. Maine aapko
Wasim aur Rajesh ka khabar diya - aapne kya
ukhaad liya?

JAGDALE
Uthaya toh tha dono ko - lekin NCB waale
beech mein aake munh maar gaye.

SELVA
Toh main bhi munh kyun kholoon? Aapke
saamne? Jab NCB ka vat aapse zyada hai.

JAGDALE
Dekh Selva. Humein Ansari chahiye. NCB se
pehle maine kaam karna shuru kiya uspe.
Aur main Raghav ki madad karne ki koshish
kar raha hoon. Uss Mahendra ki tarah nahin.
Jisne waada kiya par Raghav ki madad nahin
ki.

SELVA
Usse toh bhai ki chokri Julie mein zyada
interest hai. Raghav bhai idhar hota toh
apna yeh haal nahin hota.

JAGDALE
Aye Selva. Dukhda sunana bandh kar. Khabar
bol. Ansari ke maal ka koi movement kyun
nahin hua itne din se?

SELVA
Main khud underground tha itne din se sahab.
Mahendra ke darr se.

JAGDALE
Mahendra bahar gaya hai. Tu bhi bahar nikal
apne bil se. Ansari itne din bina maal
ghumaye nahin baithne wala.

SELVA
Main khabar nikal ke batata hoon.

JAGDALE
Tu khabar nikaal. Main Raghav ke liye kuch
karne ki koshish karta hoon.

Selva nods. He looks through the window glass if the street is


empty. Satisfied he unlocks the door. He is about to open when
Jagdale puts a hand on his shoulder.

JAGDALE (CONT'D)
(firm)
Selva. Mujhe Ansari chahiye. NCB se pehle.

Selva nods, nervously.

Jagdale nods 'get lost.'

On Jagdale's face. FREEZE FRAME. Music. And the screen splits


into four.

Jagdale from ANC. DRI Deputy Director. Usmaan from NCB. And
above all Naved Ansari.
