Evaluation: How effective is the combination of your main product

and ancillary texts?

In addition to our film trailer we were asked to produce two ancillary texts including a film
poster and a film magazine front cover. I approached completing the ancillary tasks in the
way I did with the main task, my first step was to research similar products. From the
research I conducted it occurred to me that the main relation between a film trailer and the
posters and magazine cover was the same colours and themes are always used.

I looked back to the mood board I created at the start of my main product (the film trailer) as the
genre and aspects were the same it helped me to get a feel for what I would want to include. Our
main product was an action thriller and we wanted to include some of the iconic elements that we
capacitated in our main product into our ancillary texts.

When we combine our film poster and our film trailer it enables the viewer to get a more in-depth
idea of the status of our characters, in the film poster we used pictures we took in the faraday room
as well as screen shots, we wanted Simon to look innocent in comparison to Edward who we wanted
to portray as scary.

As I touched on earlier in my answer it was imperative for us to use similar fonts, colours and text
that we used on our main task, this gives us our own unique theme and makes us recognisable to
the audience, this would be useful if we wished to advertise the film on billboards or other thing
using only text. I think continuity within the text and themes is the key to making the ancillary texts
effective when matched with our main product.

For the magazine cover we decided to use the empire magazine as a template for us to create our
own, ours fits in with the traditional layout including feature articles to entice readers in, we also
used empires standard trait of having a key figure taking up the most part of the magazine behind
text. The appearance we wanted to create for Juan Renaldo Gonzalez was an intimidating one, we
did this by hiding his eyes and putting him in a leather jacket this combines with our main product
gives the impression that he is “the bad guy” and we want to promote this.
