Henry, John

Picture
John Henry is an American legend

John Henry is the hero of a famous American ballad, a song that tells a story. The ballad is
based on the true story of an African American worker who was helping dig a railroad tunnel
around 1870. The workers used hammers with long handles to pound a steel drill into rock.

One day, a man brought in a new steam drill and said it could dig a hole faster than 20
workers using hammers. John Henry took the challenge and beat the steam drill. In the
ballad, John Henry was so tired out that he died at the very moment he won. The real John
Henry won the race but was later killed by falling rock inside the tunnel.
