Sir Timothy John (Tim) Berners-Lee’s Biography

Sir Tim Berner- Lee is the inventor of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) which is the language
which makes Web Pages what they are today. Sir Tim Berners-Lee was born on the 8th of June 1955
to Conway Berners-Lee and Mary Lee Woods who were both mathematicians. During his childhood
he had a hobby for electronics and used the Ferranti Mark I computer. He attended Steenmount
Primary school, and then he moved to Emanuel School, followed by Oxford’s Queens College where
he was banned from using PCs because he was caught hacking Oxford computers with a friend, and
then he moved to MIT.

After he studied at MIT he decided to go to CERN and work there. It was hard to share data at CERN
because there were a wide variety of computers and there were not just DOS (Ancestor of Windows)
or UNIX (Ancestor of Linux and Mac) or Macs. He made a program to convert files to make them
readable but this process was slow. So he started a project called “Enquire” but that project was
scrapped and started work on the Web. In 1989 he finished HTML, in 1990 He finished the First Web
Browser in the world, and called it “WorldWideWeb” (Later renamed NEXUS to avoid confusion with
the World Wide Web), WorldWideWeb also functions as a WYSIWIG web editor.

Tim Berners-Lee went and started W3C in 2004, an organization made to keep a central standard
over HTML. During that time some websites had different standards that can only be viewed with
one browser. This is the current case of the HTML5 Standard which is still in draft format.

He was knighted in 2004 in honour of his contribution to the world wide web.

 Well done Ja, you have organized a lot of research into clear, well ordered paragraphs.
