What Is a Subjective Test?
 A test where the examiner evaluates the
answers according to his/her own
judgment

 A subjective test is evaluated by giving an

opinion. The teacher evaluates a student's
learning based on critical thinking
What Is a Subjective Test?
 Subjective assessment is a form of
questioning which may have more
than one correct answer (or more than
one way of expressing the correct
answer)
 Subjective tests are more

challenging to prepare, administer

and evaluate correctly, but they can
be more valid
What Can Be Meassured
Subjectively?
 Tests of writing ability are often subjective
because they require an examiner to give an
opinion on the level of the writing. For
example, paragraphs, compositions, letters, or
essays.
 Test of oral skills are also subjective. For
example, speeches, debates, group discussions,
forums, etc.
Disadvantages of Subjective
Writing Tests
 Dependence on presentation:
If you have bad handwriting the teacher may be
unable/unwilling to struggle in order to
understand your answer
 Facility in writing:

Those who write fluently, speedily and whose

flow of thought comes easily, have an
advantage over those who think more slowly
and those who write with less facility
Disadvantages of Subjective
Writing Tests

 Question evasion:
If there are several questions in a
subjective test, only some of which must be
answered, then it is possible for the
students to avoid questions in areas of
the curriculum in which they are weak
Disadvantages of Subjective
Writing Tests
 Variation in marking:
This is possibly the greatest disadvantage
to a subjective test: inconsistency in
subjective assessment
Research has shown that experienced
examiners provide varying marks not only
on the same piece of work marked by
other examiners, but on their own marked
scripts re-marked after a passage of time
Advantages of Subjective Writing
Tests

 Unlike objective tests, subjective tests can

demonstrate the students’ ability to organize
material and present it in a logical order

 Subjective tests allow a student to express

originality of thought

their ability to develop an argument

 In addition, subjective tests allow the examiner

to assess the student's quality of written
expression
