• Rejection of the Arabs to the rights of the
Jewish people to rebuild their own territory in
the Middle East.
• Attempt of Israel to cope with the security
challenges caused by its rejection.
What were the highlights of the war?

Egypt imposed a naval blockade to the southern


port of Israel
Israel launched a pre-emptive strike against the
Egyptian army and air force
Result: Egyptian air force was crippled. well-
executed Israeli ground offensive routed the
Egyptian forces in Gaza and the Sinai
peninsula in four days.
What were the highlights of the war?

Jordan attacked Israel from the eastern portion


of Jerusalem and from lands it occupied west
of the Jordan river 
Israeli Forces responded by attacking Jordanian
Military Positions
After 3 days, Israeli forces defeated Jordanian
forces and at the same time gained control of
Jerusalem and the West Bank

Syrians attacked Israel through air on the first


day of the war
Israel had a shattering blows from the Syrian Air
Forces until they gained enough forces to
defeat the Syrians on the 5th day of the war
Israel totally completed the difficult operation
on the last day of the war bringing the active
phase of the war to close.
What happened after the war?
• Israel hoped for peace talks with the Arab
Nations
• Khartoum Declaration: “no peace with Israel,
no negotiations with Israel, no recognition of
Israel, and 'maintenance of the rights of the
Palestinian people in their nation”
• On October 21, an Egyptian missile boat sunk
the Israeli destroyer Eilat, killing 47 people.
What happened after the war?
• UN Resolution 242

 Withdrawal of Israel armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;

Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgment of the
sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their
right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force;

 Affirms further the necessity

(a) For guaranteeing freedom of navigation through international waterways in the area;

(b) For achieving a just settlement of the refugee problem;

(c) For guaranteeing the territorial inviolability and political independence of every State in the area, through
measures including the establishment of demilitarized zones

 Requests the Secretary-General to designate a Special Representative to proceed to the Middle East to establish
and maintain contacts with the States concerned in order to promote agreement and assist efforts to achieve a
peaceful and accepted settlement in accordance with the provisions and principles in this resolution;
 Requests the Secretary-General to report to the Security Council on the progress of the efforts of the Special
Representative as soon as possible.
