Project 3 – Hygiene Promotion

Increase Capacity in Emergencies

Phase 1 & 2

Introduction/ Rationale

Currently the way in which hygiene promotion (HP) is implemented varies widely within
agencies and it is frequently given scant attention during sector coordination meetings. It
has been suggested that there is a lack of clarity within the WASH sector in relation to the
purpose of hygiene promotion and its expected outcomes and that it suffers from a lack of
common understanding of methods and approaches in its implementation.

Aim

The aim is to improve capacity and coordination of hygiene promotion interventions in

emergencies and produce some best practice materials drawing on information from UN
organizations and a number of international humanitarian NGOs.

Outputs/content of project (Phase 1 & 2)

 Introduction to Hygiene Promotion: tools and approaches aimed at coordinators,

generalists and others interested in understanding the basics about Hygiene
Promotion. Includes: Summary briefing paper (8 pages) of the essentials on Hygiene
Promotion, Indicators, Advice on HP-related Non Food Items selection and delivery,
Example Job Descriptions, Equipment lists for HP Communication, Bibliography and
orientation workshop.
 Capacity building/strengthening of regional institutions to provide training to promote
best practice hygiene promotion in emergency response. Tool available: Assessment
tool for regional institutions undertaking HP training for emergencies.
 Visual Aids Library DVD This picture library has been compiled by the WASH Cluster
Hygiene Promotion Project for use on WASH programmes. The intention has been to
provide a resource for use in the early stages of an acute emergency where there is
limited time to develop context specific visual aids. WASH Visual Aids Library: All you
need to run WASH Activities: picture sets, photos, posters leaflets, games, songs, radio
slots, videos. Comes with instructions in English, French and Spanish.'
 Hygiene Promotion Training aimed at providing best practice training packages for
Community Mobilisers, Hygiene Promoters and HP Coordinators.
 Evidence Base for WASH in emergencies aimed at increasing the understanding of the
current relevant evidence base for WASH programming in emergencies. (Linked with
the WASH Cluster Information Management project.)
 Data Collection Methods for WASH in emergencies with the aim of improving the
quality and consistency of data used for planning, managing and coordinating WASH
programmes in emergencies. (Linked with the WASH Cluster Information Management
project.)
