New Knowledge…
what I learned from my network

I didn’t think my brother had much value. Although he played professional baseball,
he didn’t have many sports business contacts to connect me with. However he got a
job as a manager at a Nike retail store. He connected me with two people that work for
Nike.

I have made many new contacts through Twitter and Linked-In. Although the
conversations aren’t deep and personal, I do connect with them on a regular basis and
make sure that I’m always on their radar.

I also discovered that some people are connectors that have contacts in many different
networks. Nico Martini is an example. He connected me with Steve Braband but also
gave me the contact information for Nate Binfold, who runs the marketing department
for Texas Entertainment Services. A company that Donnie Nelson, who’s in my
network, owns.

I found that just like in life, that social networks are great because every major player
is connected with each other, even if they don’t actually know each other. All it takes
is one good blog post that impresses some one, and I could be the buzz around the
network.

beyond what I started with

From the conversations I had with the contacts I developed


in my network I found that a position in social media is more
about brand management and PR than it is about marketing.

I knew I was interested in marketing, but from talking to my


contacts, I found that I was more interested in brand
management from a social and PR perspective.

I have made many new contacts through Twitter and Linked-


In. Although the conversations aren’t deep and personal, I do

Future Network Activity..
my plan on how to use this new tool

I found that I need to do more in person networking at events and meet ups. I
plan to attend more meet ups so that I can network in person and build up
contacts that way.

I also plan to dive deeper into the contacts I’ve made now. Mending the gaps
between people so that I become someone in everyone's view.

I will now start to bug everyone I sit next to in class for their Twitter, Facebook,
or Linked In accounts so that I’m connected to them. You may never know who
is sitting next to you in class.

Lastly, I plan on blogging more regularly. It may impress someone that is


connected or is looking to higher someone. It would also show that I have
knowledge and that I’m actively participating in the position I want to work in.
