A Comprehensive Reflection
Of
ETC 450
Spring 2011
By Joy Seery
In the Beginning:
 Assessing Prior Knowledge
Just ask the students!

Watch and Observe!

Then Test ‘em!

Today’s Assessing Prior Knowledge
 One size does not fit all
 Formal and Informal
 There is more than one way to assess students:

Tests
Rubrics
Portfolios
Planning Instruction Then:
 Standards First!!!

 Teach the Standards!!!!!!

 Teach to the test?

Planning Instruction Now
 Use Your Ideas and Tie them into the standards
Excitement is infectious, if your excited about
something, the students will be too!

 Be prepared

This does not just mean have your

materials ready.
This also means have a back up plan.
Be ready to change if technology is not
working right and also back up your plans by
having copies!
Designing Instruction Then
 It is a process with a lot of items to take into
consideration:
 Duration of lesson
 Goals and Objectives
 Standard Alignments
 Multiculturalism & Diversity
 Engagement
 Modeling
 Guided Practice & Independent Practice
Designing Instruction Now
 Still a lot to think about, but include:

Technology

Engagement

And do not be afraid to beg, borrow and………..

USE!!!!!!!
Planning Assessment
Then: Tests
Now:
 Start with the source, the students

 Link to goals and objectives

Authentic Versus Technology
OLD SCHOOL
 Paper and Pencil
 ABC NEW AGE
 Create
 Design
 Show Knowledge
PowerPoint
Movies
Webpages
Electronic Portfolios
Instructional Decisions/Teaching
 Be Open to New Ideas
 Technology is everywhere so……….

Embrace it
&
Incorporate it!
Assessment of Learning
As Confucius says:
“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do
and I understand.”

He had it figured out all those years ago………

So why has education taken so long to realize that
actively engaging students is the answer to
learning.
Assessment doesn’t have to be boring!
 Students learn more if they are doing, so check
them while they are participating.
 Use many ways to check for knowledge:
 Begin with probes
 Design instruction to meet their needs
 Allow access to multiple representations of
knowledge
 Assess by looking at growth through portfolios
 Use the assessments to review as needed or move on
to keep their minds growing
Overall
 Remember:

“Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may

remember; involve me and I'll understand.”
 Chinese Proverb

Don’t be afraid to ask for help and seek others

advise!

I AM READY!!!!!
