ECO Living Programme April 2011

ECO Living Programme @ Hong Kah North

Venue: ITE College West

Date: 29.04.2011
Time: 2pm – 4pm

Overview

ECO Living Programme is a year-long community grassroots programme

that aims to relief the burden of low/ middle-income families while
doing our bit for the Earth. Energy, water and waste audits in HDB
households are performed by volunteers in order to identify areas for
improvement.

The theme for this time was “Energy”. A healthy turnout of 120 students
from ITE College West volunteered to go door-to-door to conduct the
audits.

The day before the audit, a briefing was conducted at the ITE College
West campus for the new student volunteers. Most of the students had
already taken part in the previous audits. This is helpful in building up a
relationship between students and residents.

Details of training for Energy Audit 1

We gave a short overview of the purpose and procedure of ELP for the
benefit of the first-time volunteers.

Then, we explained how an energy audit requires more than just looking
at the utilities bill and is actually a process of facilitating change in the
client. To do so, we need to create a vision for them to see and give
concrete steps they can take towards that vision. We would also need
to overcome their resistance to change.

The volunteers were then taught how to estimate the energy usage of
air-cons, fans and refrigerators, as well as give specific tips to reduce this
usage.

The volunteers also had the chance to familiarise themselves with the
operational procedure and the forms they would be using for the
actual day.

Finally, some of the volunteers role-played various scenarios and

everyone had a chance to comment and suggest improvements.
