BACKGROUND INFORMATION

• During photosynthesis the reaction taking

place is:
6CO2+6H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2
• Photosynthesis takes place in the presence of
light thus light intensity is a limiting factor in
the process.
PROCEDURE
• The plant was exposed to the visible light as
well as ultraviolet light passing through the
plastic sheet (on which the sunblock was
applied).
• The change in the oxygen produced was
recorded using an oxygen sensor and that in
relative humidity was recorded using an RH
sensor.
• The results were tabulated and analyzed.
EFFECT OF VISIBLE LIGHT

• Optimum light intensity was observed for the sunblock

with SPF 50 as there was a decrease in the level of
oxygen produced for the sunblock with SPF 60.
EFFECT OF ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT

• No change in the oxygen level is observed.

EFFECT OF ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT ON
HUMIDITY

• With increase in SPF of the sunblocks, the

humidity in the experimental set up gradually
increases.
CONCLUSION
• Increase in light intensity of visible light
increases the rate of photosynthesis.
• The increase in the temperature (due to the
increase in light intensity) leads to decrease in
rate of photosynthesis after it reaches the
optimum temperature.
• Ultraviolet light does not affect
photosynthesis.
• Decrease in intensity of ultraviolet radiation
leads to increase in rate of transpiration which
leads to increase in relative humidity.
EVALUATION
• The decrease in the rate of photosynthesis after
reaching the optimum temperature is due to de-
naturation of the enzymes in the plant cells.
• The ultraviolet light rays did not affect the
process as it may sometimes damage the cells in
the leaves.
• The increase in relative humidity is due to
increase in the rate of transpiration due to
decreased ultraviolet radiation.
