ENERGY

Present Scenario and Strengths:

he erstwhile Mysore State had the enviable and glorious position of
establishing the first major Hydro-electric generating station at
Shivasamudram as early as 1902 for commercial operation.
The technology at that time was still in its infancy, even in the
advanced countries. The longest transmission line, at the highest voltage in
the world, was constructed to meet the power needs of mining operations at
Kolar Gold Fields.
Power sector in Karnataka is organized into Generation, Transmission
and Distribution. Generation in the State is spear headed by Karnataka
Power Corporation Limited (KPCL). Karnataka Power Transmission
Corporation Limited (KPTCL) is the sole transmission utility which handles
power from the grid to the distribution level. The power is distributed to the
customers through five Distribution Companies namely, BESCOM,
MESCOM, HESCOM, GESCOM & CESCO, and one co-operative Society
i.e. Hukkeri Rural Co-operative Society.

Potential / opportunities:
At present the Karnataka power corporation limited (KPCL) has an installed
capacity of 5754 MWs out of which 3656 MWs is through Hydro electric
stations and 2098 MWs through Thermal stations. It has a very small
component of Wind and Solar power also. Within the installed capacity of
5754 MWs on an average 3872 MWs capacity is available.

In order to facilitate private investment in development of conventional

energy resources, Power Company of Karnataka limited (PCKL) was
formed in the year 2007. PCKL invites private players for investing in
power projects in the State and also take up Energy Trading on behalf of all
Distribution Companies.

Government of Karnataka has always emphasized development of

renewable energy and had been in forefront in harnessing wind energy.
Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (KREDL) is
the nodal agency of Government which is championing the green agenda of
Government, in the energy sector.

The power generation in Karnataka is also supported by non-conventional

energy sources like wind, solar, mini hydel, bio-mass as well as small IPPs.
Presently renewable energy sources contribute about 4600 MU of energy per
annum (11.5%) of the total 40000 MU available from various installed
capacities (8600 MW including share from CGS) in the State. The energy
demand is projected to attain 10 % growth.
The Component of various sources of Renewable Energy in the installed
capacity is given as under:

Government’s initiatives for development of the sector:

• NEW PROJECTS
a. MOU was signed with Chattisgarh State for putting up 1200 MW planned
at the pit-head in Zanzgir, Champa District.
b. Work started on 400 MW hydro electric plant at Gundia.
c. KPCL in joint venture with BHEL started work for 2400 MW Coal based
power plant at Yermarus & Edlapur.
d. 3 MW Solar power projects each at Kolar, Belgaum and Raichur were
undertaken by KPCL.
• The above works would be completed in the next four and half years i.e.
by the end of 2013 and early by 2014. This would result into meeting the
demand becoming surplus State in 2014.

• Initiatives taken up by PCKL have already been discussed. The non-

conventional energy sources are also being tapped for optimal power
generation in the State. Through Non Conventional energy resources an
addition of 4200MW is planned .

• KREDL
1. To facilitate the investors, a single window with simplified
procedures be established.
2. Support of Bio-mass power generation through a robust tariff
policy without over burdening the consumers thus increasing the
private sector investment.
3. KREDL to be a nodal agency for the Government to identify
Government lands along with clearances to reduce the delay in
execution by private investors.
