Asiatic Lions

The Gīr National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarāt, India, is the only remaining habitat of the
Asiatic lion, a species that was nearly extinct in the early 1900s. Here officials keep track of the
individual prides (companies of lions).

Endangered Gorilla
Every country with a wild gorilla population has laws governing their capture and
hunting. But as recently as 1984 there was active trade in gorilla skulls from the
Volcans National Park in Rwanda from which this photograph was taken. Today,
countries such as Rwanda are implementing educational, conservation, and tourism
programs in an effort to demonstrate to the local population the value of the native
flora and fauna.
