Patients may be considered for extubation if their negative inspiratory force is greater than -25 torr, respiratory rate is less than 30 breaths per minute, tidal volume is greater than 5 cc/kg, vital capacity is greater than 10 cc/kg, PaO2 is greater than 65 on an FiO2 less than 0.40, PaCO2 is less than 50 torr, resting minute ventilation is less than 10 l/min, level of consciousness is adequate, tidal volume divided by respiratory rate is greater than 10, and arterial or capillary pH is greater than or equal to 7.25.
