Kevin Rome
What is it?

 Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is an

inherited disorder.
 It’s caused by a defective gene of Dystrophin
(protein in the muscle)
 It happens when there’s a mutation on the ‘X’
chromosome.
Physical Defects
 Muscle weakness
 Fatigue
 Disability to walk (probably to
the age at 12)
 Heart failure/ problems
 Abnormal heart muscle
 Scoliosis (a disease that causes your spine to curve)
 Obesity
Mental Defects
 It’s possible to have mental retardation, but it
doesn’t worsen over a period of time.
 Also can have mental impairment but it varies.
 Mental impairment is when the mind isn’t
completely developed.
Who does it effect and how
common is it?
 Occurs in approximately 1 out 3600 male infants
 Women have a 50% chance of being carriers
 Male have a 50% chance of having the disease
Life Expectancy
 The child’s average age to live up to is 25 years
old
 They usually die of lung disorders
 We found that someone at the age of 29 was still
alive living with this disease.
Curing & Normal life?
 There is no known cure for the disease
 Activity helps slow down the effects

 They can’t live a normal life

 They need help at all times just to get through life
As a couple…
 We would keep the child. All we would have to
do is keep the child physically active
 Also have them go to the doctor often, but we
would live him no matter what.
