A sad character in the novel

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Based on the novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the character that I find sad is Mr.
Utterson. The reasons for this are because he had to face the death of Dr. Lanyon, his
friendship with Dr. Jekyll is ruined and he is the last person to know the truth about
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Firstly, Mr. Utterson had to face the death of his old friend, which is Dr. Hastie
Lanyon. After Dr. Lanyon was bedridden for less than two weeks, his life came to an
end. Mr. Utterson as one of his friends, was sad for his death.

Next, as we can see in the novel, Mr. Utterson’s friendship with Dr. Jekyll was
ruined when Dr. Jekyll refused to meet Mr. Utterson for several times. Furthermore,
when Mr. Utterson met Dr. Lanyon to complain about Dr. Jekyll, Dr. Lanyon gave him
negative response. Dr. Jekyll even shut himself from the world. This shows that he did
not want to meet any of his friends.

Lastly, Mr. Utterson faced another sad moment when he became the last person to
know about the truth of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He came to know about the truth
when he found a large envelope in Dr. Jekyll’s laboratory. He also referred to Dr.
Lanyon’s letter to him. This proves that he was the last person to know about the truth
after Dr. Lanyon.

Based on the reasons above, it is clearly obvious the Mr. Utterson portrays as a sad
character in this novel. His traits although is sad it does not deter the fact that Mr.
Utterson is and always will be a fairly respectable character in this novel.
