    LONDON, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2011 --- This evening, Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale brought the extraordinary total of £108,803,550 / $174,129,201 /€120,923,897 – in excess of pre-sale expectations (estimate: £74-105 million), establishing the highest total ever achieved for any Sale of Contemporary Art in London*. The top selling-lot of the auction was Francis Bacon’s Crouching Nude from 1961, which achieved £8,329,250/$13,330,132/€9,257,100. Buyers from 14 countries participated in the auction, which achieved remarkable sell-through rates of 89.8% by lot and 93.9% by value, established five new artist records, and saw 29 works sell for over £1 million, and 45 lots sell for over $1 million. Discussing the results, Cheyenne Westphal, Sotheby’s Chairman of Contemporary Art Europe, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the results of tonight’s sale, which represent the highest total for any Contemporary Art Sale ever staged in London. The strong results of the remarkable Duerckheim Collection represent a triumph for German Art and reflect the extraordinary works offered. With bidders and buyers from over 14 countries in tonight’s sale - including institutional bidding - German art went global. Juergen Hall, entrepreneur and collector from Germany, purchased lot 5, Gerhard Richter's photorealistic work "Schwestern" from 1967, for £2, 505,250 and Mr. Hall has generously announced that he will lend this painting to the Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany, which is yet further testament to the museum-quality of this extraordinary collection.” “Following this remarkable result, iconic artworks with Rock ‘n’ Roll provenance and portraiture by two titans of their respective contemporary art movements which exuded quality, provenance and rarity, also performed well. The alluring combination of supreme wall-power, art history, zeitgeist music and Rock ‘n’ Roll culture are manifest in these paintings, and proved irresistible to collectors.” The Duerckheim Collection: The first 34 lots of the sale, from the Duerckheim Collection, realised £60,401,650 / $96,666,801 / €67,130,189 – almost doubling the low estimate of £31.8-45.9 million ($51-74 million / €35.6-51.4 million) – with almost every lot contested by multiple bidders. Headlining the Duerckheim collection were a number of paintings by Sigmar Polke. The artist’s record was broken three times in quick succession as collectors competed hard for works by the German master. Kopf, the second lot of the sale, exceeded the artist’s previous record by a considerable margin when it sold for £3,737,250 ($5,981,095/€4,153,567) well above its pre-sale estimate of £800,000- 1,200,000 after a contest between no fewer than five bidders. The record stood for only minutes until it was broken by Dschungel, by far the largest of the artist’s legendary Rasterbilder (dot paintings) from the 1960s ever to appear for public sale, this painting has been virtually unknown since its execution and until Sotheby’s catalogue only reproduced in black and white. This exceptional piece saw 2 competition from no fewer than four bidders, and finally sold for £5,753,250 ($9,207,501/€6,394,143) (est. £3-4 million). Among other strong Polke prices was Stadtbild II from 1968, which doubled the low estimate to sell for £4,633,250 ($7,413,053/€4,526,996) (est. £2-3 million). The sale also saw a series of exceptional prices for achieved for works by Gerhard Richter. 1024 Farben from 1974 more than doubled its pre-sale high estimate when it sold for £4,297,250 ($6,877,319/€4,775,949) (est. £1-1.5 million). Madchen im Liegestuhl sold for £4,073,250 ($6,518,829/€4,526,996), again comfortably exceeding its high estimate (est. £1.2-1.8 million) and the ground-breaking 1960s photo-painting Telefonierender brought £3,233,250 ($5,174,493/€3,593,423), above pre-sale expectatio
