Eric Widing, Head of American Paintings comments: Today, top prices returned to the American marketplace. Leading the
sale was Oscar Bluemners superb modernist landscape, Illusion of a Prairie, New Jersey, which set a world auction record for the
artist of over $5.3 million, shattering the previous record. Other categories excelled, including Impressionism, with John Singer
Sargents masterful watercolor of Venice, The Piazzetta with Gondolas, which sold for $842,500, and Frederic Edwin Churchs
luminous Maine landscape, Twilight, which achieved a robust $3.2 million. In all, six lots exceeded one million dollars.
