    Christie's sale of Important American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture in New York achieved $25,806,550/£16,437,292/€19,258,619 and was 79% sold by value and 64% sold by lot. Eric Widing, Head of American Paintings comments: “Today, top prices returned to the American marketplace. Leading the sale was Oscar Bluemner’s superb modernist landscape, Illusion of a Prairie, New Jersey, which set a world auction record for the artist of over $5.3 million, shattering the previous record. Other categories excelled, including Impressionism, with John Singer Sargent’s masterful watercolor of Venice, The Piazzetta with Gondolas, which sold for $842,500, and Frederic Edwin Church’s luminous Maine landscape, Twilight, which achieved a robust $3.2 million. In all, six lots exceeded one million dollars.”
