9th April 2010 Dear Re: Rita Hillary DOB 10.11.40 On Monday 8th March 2010 I attended an appointment at Newcastle Dental Hospital for the extraction of a wisdom tooth. The dentist injected my mouth to numb the area of the tooth to be extracted. I waited approx 15-20 minutes for the drug to take effect and returned back into the Dentist to start the procedure. Ten minutes into the extraction there was a loud cracking sound. The dentist stopped and said that he would have to see a colleague. He returned with a colleague and both had a look and a chat. The colleague then said that I must go to the x-ray department within the Dental Hospital, which I did straight away. On returning to the Dentist, he said that I must go to the General Hospital straight away due to sustaining a broken jaw whilst trying to extract my wisdom tooth. The x-ray had confirmed that my jaw was broken. I went to the General Hospital with Mr Barry Roden. The Dentist had informed them that I was on my way and what was wrong. I also had a letter from the Dentist. On arrival I was sent to ward 21 to be booked in and was given a bed. A nurse explained that I would be in surgery approximately 1430 hrs on 9th March 2010 the next day. I was in extreme pain after the anaesthetic had worn off. My face was swollen on the right side of my mouth and bruising had started to appear. The hospital staff gave me some medication for the pain. I stayed in hospital overnight to await surgery the next day. I had the surgery on the afternoon of the 9th March and a plate and screws were inserted to fixate my jaw. The wisdom tooth was extracted at the same time. I stayed in hospital for another night and was released on 10th March to go home with some medication to ease the pain and stop any infection. Yours faithfully

Rita Hillary
