1. (a) Define the terms specific speed of a turbine, unit speed, unit power and unit
rate of flow of a turbine. [8]
(b) A Kaplan turbine operates under a head of 15.2 m, has a speed of 75 rpm
and develops 50 MW of power. The overall efficiency of the turbine is 82%.
Calculate the specific speed, unit speed, unit discharge and unit power. [8]

2. (a) Derive expressions for acceleration head and friction loss of head for a single
acting reciprocating pump. [8]
(b) Find the speed in rpm, discharge, manometric head, power and work done
per unit weight of a centrifugal pump from the following data. Inlet diameter
=12.5 cm, inlet vane angle = 120 , exit diameter = 25 cm, exit vane angle
= 450 , width of impeller at exit =2.5 cm, constant velocity of flow = 3 m/s,
manometric efficiency = 80% and overall efficiency =72%. The fluid is gasoline
of specific gravity 0.79. [8]

3. Draw the diagrammatic sketch to explain the working of modern water tube boiler
showing the location of the super heater. Name the important parts and show your
diagram the paths taken by:

(a) Water and Steam.


(b) Flue gases. [16]

4. (a) What is the function of water level indicator in a boiler plant? [4]
(b) Discuss with the help of neat diagram working of water level indicator. [12]

5. (a) Explain the working of reaction turbine with a neat sketch. [10]
(b) Show pressure and velocity variations along the axis of the reaction turbine
and explain. [6]

6. The ideal open gas turbine plant is designed to operate under the following condi-
tions.
Inlet air pressure and temperature = 1 bar and 150 C
Pressure ratio = 5
Maximum temperature = 6500 C
Power developed = 2500 KW
Calculate the mass flow rate of air in kg/s and thermal efficiency of the cycle.
Take adiabatic index γ = 1.4 and, Specific heat at constant pressure CP = 1.005
KJ/kg-K for air. [16]

7. (a) Draw a neat sketch to explain the construction and operation of a hydraulic
press.
(b) A hydraulic press has a ram of 10 cm diameter and a plunger of 1.25 cm. What
force will be required on the plunger to raise a load of 20 kN on the ram? If
the plunger has a stroke of 20 cm, how many strokes will be required to lift
the load by 60 cm? Also calculate the volume of additional liquid required.
Further if the time taken to lift the load is 10 minutes, what should be the
power of the motor required to drive the plunger? Neglect frictional effects.

1. (a) what are unit quantities? Define the unit quantities for a turbine. Why are
they important? [8]
(b) A turbine develops 150 kW while running at 120 rpm under a head of 10 m.
The diameter of the runner is 1.5 m. A 1:3 scale model of this turbine is
tested under a head of 3 m. Determine the speed and power developed in the
model. Assuming an overall efficiency of 0.9 for both the model and prototype
calculate the discharge in the model. [8]

2. (a) List out the difficulties that are generally encountered in operating centrifugal
pumps. [8]
(b) A centrifugal impeller has diameters of 1.2 m and 0.60 m at outlet and inlet
respectively. It lifts 1750 lpm of water against a head of 5 m. the vane angle
at outlet is 1500. the speed is 220 rpm and the constant velocity of flow is 2.5
m/s. calculate the manometric efficiency and the minimum starting speed. [8]

3. Explain with neat sketch the construction and working of Babcock and Wilcox
water tube boiler. Show the position of various mountings and explain the function
of each. [16]

4. (a) Explain why the blow-off cock is operated periodically when the boiler is
working? [4]
(b) What is the function of following boilers mountings: [12]
i. Water level indicator
ii. Pressure gauge
iii. Safety valve
iv. Fusible plug
v. Blow-off cock
vi. Feed check valve.

5. In a Rankine cycle, the steam at inlet to turbine is dry saturated at a pressure of


30 bar and the exhaust pressure is 0.25 bar. Determine [16]

6. In a gas turbine plant, operating on ideal Joule cycle, air enters the compressor at 1
bar and 270 C. The pressure ratio in the cycle is 6. Calculate maximum temperature
in the cycle, thermal efficiency and net workdone per kg of air if the turbine work
is 2.5 times the compressor work.
Take adiabatic index γ = 1.4 and, Specific heat at constant pressure CP = 1.005
KJ/kg-K for air. [16]

7. (a) What is the difference between a hydraulic ram and a centrifugal pump?
(b) An intensifier receives water from an overhead tank through a pipeline 50 mm
in diameter and 100 long and conveys high pressure water to a 600kN hydraulic
press having a ram 0.2 m diameter. The intensifier has low pressure piston
diameter 1 m and high pressure ram diameter 0.1 m. If the static head on
the low pressure side of the intensifier is 21 m, calculate the rate of movement
of the ram when exerting its maximum force. Take coefficient of friction f =
0.030 for the pipeline (50 mm dia.). [16]

8. The crank of a slider crank mechanism is 150 mm and connecting rod is 750 mm.
The crank rotates at a constant speed of 300 rpm. clock wise. Calculate the velocity
of the slider when crank has turned 300 from the inner dead position. [16]

1. (a) Define Surveying. Explain its importance for civil Engineers.


(b) What is meant by Reconnaissance Survey.
(c) A Chain was tested before starting a survey and was found to be exactly 30m.
At the end of the Survey, it was tested again and found to measure 30.10m.
The area of the plan of the field drawn to a sale of 1cm = 20m was 160 square
centimeters. Find the true area of the field in square metres. [5+3+8]

2. (a) Explain the functions of air vessels in a reciprocating pump. [8]


(b) A single acting reciprocating pump has a piston diameter 150 mm and stroke
of length 250 mm. The piston makes 50 double strokes per minute. The
suction and delivery heads are 5 m and 15 m respectively. Find discharge
capacity of the pump in lit/m, force required to work the piston during the
suction and delivery strokes if the efficiency of suction and delivery strokes are
60% and 75% respectively and power required to operate the pump. [8]

laboratorty: supply head = 2.5 m: delivery head = 15 m: ratio of water raised
to water wasted by the ram = 1:10. Determine the efficiency of ram. [16]

1. (a) Write short note on Scroll casing, draft tube, turbine efficiencies. [8]
(b) A Kaplan turbine produces 44000 kW under a head of 25 m with an overall
efficiency of 90%. Taking the value of speed ratio as 1.6, flow ratio as 0.5
and the hub diameter as 0.35 times the outer diameter, find the diameter and
speed of the turbine. [8]

2. (a) Explian the working principle of reciprocating pump with sketches. [8]
(b) A single acting reciprocating pump runs at 60 rpm. The diameter of the
plunger is 0.15 m and crank radius is 0.15 m. The suction pipe is 0.1m in
diameter and 5 m long. Calculate the maximum permissible value of suction
lift Hs if the separation takes place at 2.6 m of water. [8]

The length and diameter of the delivery pipe is 100 m and 70 mm respectively.
Calculate the efficiency of the hydraulic ram if the co-efficient of friction f =
0.036. [16]

8. Sketch and explain the various inversions of slider crank chain. [16]
