St. Francis Church is a community dedicated to the

transformation of lives through the Gospel of Jesus Christ for
the Kingdom of God.

The First Sunday after Pentecost:

Trinity Sunday
A note for visitors: We’re thankful that you could join us for worship today, and we
pray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin. If you
have any questions don’t hesitate to ask someone around you!

St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. The practice of
dividing families for worship is a modern invention and is often detrimental to the goal
of worshipping as a body. In order to be a community where all ages feel welcome,
we provide coloring materials for children to use during worship and seek to be a
community that understands the specific gifts and challenges that children bring. We
encourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with your
children, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what is happening.

That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to take
advantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through the
Kitchen off of the entryway.

In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the service
begins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply,
and reflect upon the past week. When you’re ready, you might say the following prayer
or one like it in preparation for worship.

O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and
of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of
heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled
affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,
the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may
faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and
at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the

 A Note on Today’s Readings

Trinity Sunday: The First Sunday after Pentecost—Year A

Welcome to St. Francis Church. The First Sunday after Pentecost is a celebration of the
Holy Trinity. This is not, however, a celebration of a doctrine, but the celebration of the
God whose self-revelation is as an interaction of love between Persons. The doctrine came
about as the Christian attempt in human language to express our experience of God: an
experience that we are God’s children, we are the brothers and sisters of God incarnate,
and we are people who find the Spirit of God living in us. Thus, the names given to God’s
action toward us and God’s own being are Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The first account of creation is our reading from the Hebrew Scriptures. While the
original writers had no idea of God as the Holy Trinity, Christians have noted that in the
act of creating, God, God’s Word, and the Spirit or Wind of God are used as terms for
God’s action. In the New Testament reading, we hear in its concluding Grace the earliest
Christian formulary of the Trinity, a passage familiar from the closing of Morning and
Evening Prayer.

God is most clearly revealed as the Trinity of Persons in Unity of Being in baptism. It is
there that we are adopted as children, thus made brothers and sisters of God’s Son, and
filled with the Holy Spirit of God. As we celebrate the Eucharist, we find our lives as a
community drawn into the community of love that we name the Holy Trinity.

The Rt. Rev. Mouneer Anis, the Anglican/Episcopal Presiding Bishop of

Egypt with North Africa & the Horn of Africa will make a special presentation at
St. George’s on the dynamic and exciting work taking place in his province, Saturday, May
24, 9:30-11:30. The event is free and open to all. Bishop Mouneer will speak primarily of
the growth and challenges of the advancement of the church in his region, but he will also
answer questions related to the wider Anglican Communion. The Rt. Rev. Anis’ comments
from the floor of a recent House of Bishops meeting in the U.S. received wide exposure and
much comment for their gracious and clear insight.. Reservations are not essential but will
help St. George’s with planning. The church is located at 4715 Harding Road in Nashville.

Vacation Bible School “What a Wonderful World”: St. Joseph of Arimathea has
invited us to participate with them in putting on a vacation Bible School with the theme
of What a Wonderful World children from 3 years old to rising 5th graders which is
scheduled from June 10-13.

Children & Youth Sunday: Mark your calendars for Sunday June 8th. During the
worship service on this day young people from the congregation will not only be serving as
Acolytes, but will also be readers, doing the prayers of the people etc...
The Gifts of God Sundays from July 6 -August 3 from 9:15-10:15: The Season
after Pentecost is a natural time to begin the process of discerning and considering the
gifts which God has bestowed upon us as individuals and as a community. I would like to
invite all of you to join in a time of learning and reflection about the meaning and use of
God’s gifts.

Inquirer’s seminar Sunday’s from August 10-September 14 from 9:15-10:15:

If you interested in learning more about St. Francis Church, have questions about who we
are, what we believe, why we do certain things in the service, or have a desire to officially
become a member of our congregation, then mark your calendars for our inquirer’s
seminar on Sunday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15.

Confirmation, Reception and reaffirmation of Baptismal vows preparation

September 21 & 28 from 9:15-10:15: Following on the heels of the Inquirers seminar,
those of you who feel called to affirm your membership in St. Francis church through
confirmation, reception or Baptism, as well as those of you who would like to publically
renew your commitments are invited to attend these two sessions in preparation for the
Bishop’s visitation on October 5.

Volunteer opportunities at St. Francis: If you are interested in any of the following

Reader/Lector (Read the lessons and lead prayers), Newsletter & website team
(basically contributing to both of these, helping to organize them, not doing it all. The
