Applications Main features System architecture Installation & maintenance Management Technical data
Microwave systems cover most of connectivity needs especially in the lower layers of the transmission networks, consolidating their role of reliable, easy-to-install and costeffective access solution. Siemens, used to be one of the frontrunners in this market segment, is ready to match the expectations of the new incoming telecommunication era characterized by broadband and mobility convergence. Nowadays, the new challenge launched by operators aims to increase link density and capacity, leaving spectrum occupancy practically unchanged. Siemens, always ready to acknowledge
market indications and trends, adds to its extensive microwave portfolio the new line of point to point low capacity digital radio: SRAL XD. Siemens expertise covers most of the outstanding technologies which current applications are based on: switching, cellular technology, radio and networking, voice and data over IP and ATM. An outstanding turnkey project management capability, the ownership of a so wide range of in-house product lines and a worldwide field proven experience, represent the unequaled Siemens business card.

Applications
SRAL XD line is primarily designed for urban networks, but is also suitable in regional networks meeting all the requirements of access and trunk applications.
Mobile Networks: in the 3G Mobile ATM based network, typically SRAL XD is used to collect traffic conveying from NodeB to Hub stations; in the 2G networks it is already implemented to provide access to core networks. In the next future, the overlay of the two mobile networks will certainly benefit from SRAL XD upgrading facilities, rewarding operators with flexible and versatile infrastructures. Fixed services Networks: SRAL XD supports ATM/IP networks, LAN and WAN.
A wide-range of applications is possible, particularly since voice and data can be transmitted over the same microwave link. A typical scenario is an enterprise with a branch office located at some distance from the main premises. Service convergence is the word summarizing the trend of this kind of network, and once again flexibility becomes a must even in this case.

Main features
Based on network specific needs, the operator can select either higher spectrum efficiency or higher system gain and hop lengths. All the parameters can be software selected locally or remotely in order to adapt the hardware platform to each single link characteristic in terms of available RF channel, payload, usable bandwidth and hop length. SRAL XD flexibility and versatility greatly optimize all the upgrading procedures and configuration changes. A terminal can be easily relocated without any hardware modification simply re-shaping its peculiar parameters on the new link requirements. Another important strong advantage is represented by the extreme compactness of SRAL XD Indoor Unit. A single 44 mm high unit is sufficient to implement any protected or unprotected terminal configuration, minimizing the impact of transmission equipment. Add/Drop and Crossconnection functionalities enrich the set of SRAL XD features: any E1 stream plugged in the near end terminal can be extracted from any E1 connector of the far end terminal, eliminating the need of bulky distribution frames. Furthermore, the Add/Drop facility permits to drop the required E1 in station leaving the remaining streams passing untouched. Automatic Transmitter Power Control has been implemented to increase the system performances, reducing power consumption and interference in crowded nodes; ATPC function can be switched off, setting the transmitted power to a fixed value included in the ATPC interval.
System architecture
SRAL XD equipment is available in Split Indoor and Outdoor Configuration; both the IDU and the ODU have been redesigned in order to reduce their mechanical dimension respect to the previous SRA L generation of PDH microwave equipment. In fact, in order to save room for the indoor installation, the dimensions of the IDU have been dramatically reduced, moving the mo/demodulation section to the ODU. As a result the IDU able to provide protected configurations is only 1U high. In spite of this change the dimensions of the ODU have been reduced as well by adopting the state of the art technology.
INDOOR UNITS
Three different IDU families are available in order to provide respectively entry level configurations, cost-effective solution and maximum flexibility. TwoE1 SingleBoard Plug-in SingleBoard and Plug-in versions, being independent from modulation format and frequency bands, are able to manage either High or Normal Density arrangements.

TwoE1 The TwoE1 indoor unit is based on a single replacement unit and it has been appositely developed for those applications where low capacity in unprotected configuration is required. The TwoE1 family is conceived as an entry level solution for traffic backhaul within access applications or mobile networks. The TwoE1 version offers 1+0 configuration with capacity up to 2xE1.
Plug-in The Plug-in version adopts a modular architecture: the basic configuration (1+0) consists of a controller, an access card and a base-band card; in order to arrange protected/add drop repeater configurations, an additional base-band card has to be added in the same shelf. The Plug-in version is able to provide a full set of configurations/interfaces: (1+0)/ (1+1) Frequency Diversity/Polarization Diversity with hitless switch, Hot Stand-by, 2x(1+0)/Add-Drop Repeater Configurations payload interfaces: 2/4/8/16/32xE1 1xE3 4x10/100 BaseT + 8xE1 SingleBoard The 1U high SingleBoard IDU is based on a single board architecture characterized by a fixed set of functionalities. Four versions are available: up to 8xE1 (1+0) up to 8xE1 (1+1) Hot Stand-by up to 16xE1 (1+0) up to 16xE1 (1+1) Hot Stand-by
OUTDOOR UNITS
State of art RF technology has been the baseline for SRAL XD ODUs development, completely matching all the technical constraints introduced by the high modulation scheme adopted for the HD version: system linearity and synthesizer phase noise.
Two different outdoor units, capacity independent, are part of SRAL XD suit: ODU ND is the appropriate solution for normal density arrangement, able to achieve the best compromise between performance and power consumption by exploiting a constant amplitude modulation format (4 CPM). ODU HD/HP born for high density arrangements, the same equipment is capable to perform normal density arrangement as well thanks to software selection of the relevant modulation format. The adoption of Trellis Code Modulation leads to Rx threshold level unmatched by a plain 16 QAM modulation.
The Outdoor unit can be directly mounted on the rear of the antenna, avoiding the use of any waveguide. Several mounting structures, holding
Management
For SRAL XD product line, system concept and embedded software architecture have been designed to allow an user-friendly and effective local and remote terminals management. SRAL XD Indoor Unit offers a wide range of management and service interfaces, together with enhanced routing functionalities: the combination of these new features dramatically improves SRAL XD interworking capabilities to fit any DCN requirement. SRAL XD, as all Siemens microwave product lines, can be managed not only by the existing Microwave Siemens NMS (NetViewer) but also by third party Management Systems: open interfaces are available to integrate SRAL XD and all the other Siemens Microwave Radio transmission equipment in multivendor transmission networks.

NetViewer The Microwave Management System NetViewer is a versatile TMN product for the management of PDH, SDH and Point-to-Multipoint microwave systems, able to supervise other vendors devices as well through a standard SNMP interface. An overall view of the complete network structure and its ability to enter down to the Network Element details give a clear picture of the whole network, its configuration and events. Fault, Configuration and Performance management are carried out at Network Element level; at Network level Fault and Security configuration are available.
Netviewer is the basic part of Siemens offer for Network Management oriented to microwave networks that is represented by the NetViewer NME Suite. The suite is composed of a number of modules: NetViewer, core of the system, as Element Manager; SNMP Agent, a real-time northbound interface; TCOA (TMF CORBA Agent), a realtime northbound interface; NML module, as Network Manager; HP OpenView NNM (Network Node Manager) add-on, that allows the integration of NetViewer in HP; OpenView NNM (product of Hewlett Packard);
HP-Compaq TeMIP add-on, that allows the integration of NetViewer in HP OpenView TeMIP (product of HP-Compaq). Moreover, NetViewer can be easily integrated both in Siemens SDH TMN platform (TNMS) with TNMS Core Radio add-on, and in Mobile TMN platform (Radio Commander) in order to offer to the operator a unique interface for management purposes.
