Continuous Wave (CW) Transmitter In order to accurately predict BTS site count for any market, it is required to adjust

the parameters of RF propagation model to account for varying terrain and morphology conditions. For this purpose, market specific measured data is the best information from RF point to ensure most accurate propagation predictions. The standard technique of collecting the above-mentioned measured data is to use a continuous wave (CW) transmitter located at any of the proposed BTS sites; transmitting a test signal of known amplitude (normally 20 watts) & frequency(in 850 MHz band) using an omni-directional antenna of 6 dBi gain and measuring the test signal with a calibrated collection receiver using a mobile van. A small magnetic mount antenna of 0 dBi gain is used for signal reception purpose. The collection receiver records position information, received signal strength, time, and frequency at a defined sampling interval. The test signal is collected over a predetermined area that truly represents the targeted coverage area in all respect surrounding that particular site. The data collected in the above process are fed into the RF planning tool and compared with the earlier coverage predictions using the un-optimised propagation model. Finally, the various parameters of the propagation model are tuned to minimize the prediction in coverage using weighted average least square technique.
