Practice of Asepsis: ALWAYS wash hands before and after preparing the medication to reduce transfer of microorganisms.
STEPS 1 and 2
Be sure that the necessary cleaning supplies, such as soap, cleansers, towels, etc. are near you before beginning. Stand in front of the wash basin---clothes should not be touching the sinks bowl.
STEPS 3 and 4
Turn on water. Regulate the force and the temperature until water is as warm as tolerable. Wet hands and wrist areas. Keep hands lower than elbows to allow the water to flow downward towards fingers.

STEPS 5 and 6
Lather thoroughly using liquid soap or bar soap. Cover all of the areas of hands. Before returning bar soap to soap dish--be sure to rinse it off thoroughly. With firm circular rubbing motions, wash each finger, hands, palms, wrists and forearms. Be sure to continue this friction motion for a minimum of 15 to 20 seconds.

STEPS 7 and 8
Use a clean orangewood stick or fingernails of the opposite hand to clean under the fingernails. Rinse completely, keeping hands lower than elbows to allow the water to flow downward towards fingers.

STEPS 9 and 10
Pat hands dry, beginning with the fingers and moving up towards the forearms. Discard towel (paper or cloth) into the proper receptacle immediately. Use another towel to turn off facet. Discard immediately without touching it with other clean hand.
