AS Film Studies

Overview

How is AS Film Studies Structured?


AS Film Studies is split into 2 units. These are: FM1: Exploring Film Form
(Sections A and B)

FM2: British and American Cinema


(Sections A, B and C )

FM1: Exploring Film Form


a) 1500 word analysis of a 3-5 minute extract from a film of your choice, looking at the following: Mise en scene Performance Cinematography Editing Sound You will also look at the roles of Spectators and Producers

FM1: Exploring Film Form


b) Creative Project for which you will produce the following: A clarification of the aims and context of the film sequence you plan Photographic storyboard of between 10 and 25 different shots 750 word reflective analysis of the completed storyboard

FM2: British and American Cinema


FM2 is the exam unit for AS Film Studies and is made up of three sections. These are:

Section A: Producers and Audiences Section B: Topics in British Cinema Section C: US Film Comparative study

FM2: British and American Cinema


Section A: Producers and Audiences In this section you will look at the following:

American and British Film Industries The film Audience The interrelationship between producers and audiences
You will answer one question from this section

FM2: British and American Cinema


Section B: British Film and Culture In this section you will look at Swinging Britain: 1963 1973, for which you must study three films. These will be: Billy Liar (1963) Darling (1965) If (1968)

FM2: British and American Cinema


Section C: US Film Comparative Study To answer section C of the exam paper, you will be looking at two films from the western genre that were made in different decades. You will be comparing the following films: True Grit (Dir: Henry Hathaway, 1969) True Grit (Dir: Ethan and Joel Coen, 2010)
