Building on a Tradition of Excellence

Delta Theta Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega Kansas State University

Our Proud Heritage

lpha Tau Omega Fraternity has been an important part of Kansas State University since 1920. With more than 1,700 Brothers initiated in our history, the Delta Theta Chapter strives to influence the lives of numerous men and cultivate lasting friendships and experiences. While many of our Brothers have pursued successful and distinguished careers in business, law, medicine, and countless other endeavors, the common bond of our brotherhood remains, along with our shared principles and values. Most of us can trace at least some of our roots and success to ATW. The early training we received through our Fraternity, including leadership, organizational and social skills, teamwork and character, played an integral role in our personal success.

legacy we have helped create and the historical quality of our Chapter that continues to date. The Chapter plays a significant role in the personal and professional development of its members, and this growth is crucial in todays competitive world. The Chapter House is central to undergraduate life for Kansas State ATWs. It is the rallying point, the living and learning center for our Brothers, and a place we have all been fortunate enough to call home. With the commitment and dedication of alumni and undergraduates alike, our home has served us well for many years. Alpha Tau Omega has been a home away from home for hundreds of young men. Now, as we look to the future and strive to maintain our record of accomplishments, we must band together as alumni and ensure the continued success of our great Fraternity.

Todays Chapter may appear different compared to the one you knew, but the values and lasting friendships remain and there is an unbroken chain of ATWs at Kansas State University that has endured for more than 90 years. All alumni can be proud of the

The Need to Rebuild

he Building Corporation has reviewed the needs and desires of todays undergraduates, the condition and safety of our structure, as well as renovations that other fraternities have completed to upgrade their chapter facilities. It is clear that we must make a major investment in our Chapter House if we are to provide a beneficial educational experience and an up-to-date facility that will serve our undergraduate men well into this century. Recently, the alumni leadership established a plan for the construction of a new Delta Theta Chapter House. Our new home will be built on the east side of our property and will increase the size of all functional areas, offer new amenities such as a dedicated Chapter room, exercise room, library and business center, and provide for enhanced life safety and different room arrangements to stay competitive with other living alternatives.

Ensuring the academic success of our members and assisting the Chapter in recruiting quality men must be top priorities of our alumni. A new facility is instrumental in achieving these goals by providing a living and learning center that also serves as a proud symbol of our vision of excellence.

We must commit to the folloWing:

safety. To ensure the safety of our members, the new Chapter House will comply with all of the stringent building codes associated with projects today. The Chapter House will have a sprinkler system. Since 1975, tragic fires at fraternity houses in the United States have caused 43 deaths and 125 injuries. Creating a safe environment for our Brothers living in the house and their guests will be a top priority. Not only will this protect our students and guests, but it is mandated by the Alpha Tau Omega National Fraternity that a full sprinkler system be installed in the next three years. Academics and technology. We have all seen the impact of technology over the years, as devices not present during your college years are now necessities. Todays students require high-speed, wireless Internet and e-mail access, multiple electrical outlets per room, quiet and well-lit study spaces, and increased privacy for the retention of upperclassmen. The architectural plans reflect each of these needs. competition. Today, alternative student housing and fraternities at Kansas State are aggressively responding to the competition by making significant investments toward upgrading and replacing their facilities. Students and their parents demand more for their housing dollars. Increasingly, students expect more room and more privacy. The number of apartment complexes surrounding the campus increases each year. Amenities include covered parking, swimming pools, fitness rooms, and clubhouses. These options, coupled with more space and privacy, draw both our older and prospective members away from the Chapter House. While we have no intention of providing all of the amenities that apartments offer, we must offer a safe, attractive facility in order to be competitive on campus.

Our Challenges
We must address our aging and worn chapter house. Our house at 1632 McCain has served us well for more than 40 years, but signs of aging are starting to show, despite recent renovations. Many of us have a strong connection to this house, but the Building Corporation recognizes that construction costs for a remodel would possibly exceed new construction costs. Additionally, the infrastructure needs would be costly and do little to improve the aesthetics or functionality of the house. Building to the east of the Chapter House will also be the least disruptive to the continuity of the Chapter as the undergraduates will never be asked to live off site while construction occurs.

We must continue to set the standard for fraternity housing. An emerging trend across the nation is the rebuilding or renovation of existing structures. In Manhattan, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Upsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternities have recently renovated their chapter facilities. To compete with these and other fraternities, we must have a competitive and attractive Chapter House. We must meet the needs of our current undergraduates and prepare for the future of the Delta theta chapter. The need for quiet, well-lit study space, computer resources, and other academic components has never been greater. Kansas State is more academically competitive than ever before. Additionally, Kansas State continues to invest in new on-campus housing, which offers all these amenities and more. If ATW is to continue attracting academic-minded students, we must equip our Chapter House to meet their changing needs. We must maintain our role as a complement to a well-rounded education. Alpha Tau Omega taught us things we could not learn in the classroom. The lessons of leadership, character, and personal responsibility are only the beginning of a very long list of traits enhanced by the ATW experience. If we expect future generations to carry on our historical success, we can settle for nothing less than the finest facility and resources. We must position ourselves to attract top student leaders who will move our fraternity forward. The Kansas State fraternity system is an extremely competitive and growing market. Students recognize the value of a positive fraternity experience in a top chapter. Completion of this project will help solidify Alpha Tau Omegas place as the premier fraternity on campus.

Our Plan

he Building Corporation has engaged the professional services of Bowman Bowman and Novick Architects to develop the design of our new facility. In all areas, the architect has been instructed to address mandatory building and fire code requirements. In addition, we have placed a special emphasis on the use of practical and durable building materials, finishes, and fixtures. The aim is a highquality and adaptable facility that will provide a safe living and learning environment for many years.

The corporation members and architect have designed a 27,000square-foot Chapter House that meets the ever-changing needs of todays ATW collegians. This state-of-the-art facility will house approximately 72-78 men. The estimate for this entire project totals $5.5 million. We need support from all Delta Theta alumni if we wish to make this house our home for the foreseeable future.

Investing in Our Future

ur investment in Alpha Tau Omega will ensure the future success of our Chapter. College fraternities play a relevant role in shaping the lives of young men. Today, perhaps more than ever, it is important that we provide young men with a group-living environment that offers opportunities for high academic achievement and the development of leadership and social skills.

We have an excellent group of undergraduate men who have already made a generous commitment of $100,000 to the capital campaign. They also commit to work hard in continuing the programs and traditions that have benefited the lives of so many ATWs over the years. Together with our undergraduates, the volunteer leadership is dedicated to this major undertaking, which will allow us to secure the future of our new Chapter House and continue to be a premier fraternity at Kansas State University. pay it forward You are the only one who can place a value on your ATW membershipthe lifelong friendships you made, the development of your values and principles, and the many ways the Delta Theta Chapter enhanced your college years. The men who came before you made your experience possible. Your investment in Delta Theta Chapter now is absolutely vital to the future success of our Fraternity and our undergraduate Brothers. We urge your thoughtful consideration of this plan. think Big, make a Big impact Because of the magnitude and importance of our objectives, we are urging all alumni to consider significant contributions to the campaign. In order for each alumnus to maximize his participation, pledges can be structured over a five-year period and may qualify through employer gift-matching policies. Early support of the campaign is preferable to help reduce borrowing costs. Gifts in honor or in memory of Brothers, as well as family and pledge class contributions, are welcome. Recognition in such cases will be given to both the donor and honoree. We urge your thoughtful consideration of this plan. With your support, ATW will continue to provide a quality living environment that supports, nurtures, and develops outstanding young men with the skills and confidence to face an ever-changing world. The commitment we make today cannot be underestimatedit will have a ripple effect on the lives of our Alpha Tau Omega Brothers for years to come.
