Long ago, in old Ayudhya, there lived a couple
named Nai Hah Tong and his wife Nang Song Sai.
Though they support each other, they differ in their
quest for success, Nai Hah Tong dreamed of
turning copper to gold so he would be rich but Nang
Song Sai had a little faith in magic for she believed
in the wealth of nature and richness of the earth.
She listened patiently to her husband’s great
expectation to the richest in Ayudhya. She said to
her husband “you have tried and experimented all
source of copper and monkey’s paw to gold, but the
copper did not turn to gold.” Why don’t you give up
his dream and go back to work like other man? Her
husband said “My wife that is not right, with each
experiment, my magic has grown stronger”

The next day, Nang Song Sai went to see his father and ask
him what to do about her husband’s unreasonable search
for gold. Her wise old father did not seem disturbed. Her
told his daughter to go home and say nothing of their
meeting for he has already a plan to help her husband.
The following day, Nai Hah Tong received an invitation
from his father-in-law at mealtime. The old man started by
saying “My son, since you desire power and long life, you
sit facing the east.” I seek honor and dignity so I shall sit
facing west but Nai Hah Tong said, “My father, I always
follow the old belief, I never sit facing north when I eat, for
I fear the bad luck such an action would cause.” The old
man smiled and nodded in agreement. A servant
interrupted the conversation by placing a large tray
bearing bowls of white rice, hot chicken curry, roasted
turtle egg, vegetable and namprick. When meal time is
over, Nai Hah Tong felt as content as a baby gibbon
sitting upon his mother’s lap.

The old man said, “My son, I have asked you to come
and see me because I need your help. Like you, my
son, I have been looking for a way to turn copper
into gold. And now, I know how to do it. I have all
the things I need for the miracle except one
additional ingredients. Because I am an old man, I
don’t think I can work hard enough and long enough
to get it.” Nai Hah Tong hurriedly replied “Never
mind father, I will get whatever you need. His father-
in-law said, I must have two kilos of soft fuzz
gathered from the underside of the banana leaf and
the fuzz must be plucked carefully with our very own
banana tree.” Furthermore, I know the fuzz will not
perform the miracle, when it comes from a tree
planted when the magical words were spoken

trees, I will collect two kilos of fuzz for you. The old
man smiled and said, I know you can do this my
son because I have faith in you, I will loan you the
money to buy the land you will need to raise banana
trees. The young man bowed low to the older. In the
hearts of each of them, there was a feeling of faith
and trust. Nai Hah Tong was determined to
accomplish his works, he even asked the help and
guidance of the priest in the village. He said that
since Nai Hah Tong was born in the year of the ox,
you must begin to plow on Wednesday, the tenth
day of fourth lunar month. The priest continued,
“Before this auspicious hour, you must build a
shrine to the guardian spirit of the field, Phra Phum.
Give him an offering the best rice. Lay it flat on a
green banana leaf. ”

The gecko had predicted goodluck and Nai Hah Tong was
not surprised when his banana plants grew tall, sturdy and
heavy with blossoms, firm yellow fruits and shinny leaves
with a soft layer of fluffy fuzz in the underside. After three
lunar years had passed, Nai Hah Tong had a half kilos of
banana fuzz, his wife has three pottery jars full of ticals.
He paid no attention to his wife profitable labor so he
borrowed more money to buy more land to be planted
with more banana trees so he could collect more banana
fuzz soon. He asked his wife to call for his father-in-law
when the old man arrived, Nai Hah Tong bowed very low
before his father-in-law and presented with the treasure
banana fuzz, the old man said “Arise, my son, today you
will be a reach man.” Nai Hah Tong trembled nervously
the old man was not in a hurry. He turned to his daughter
calmly and asked, “Have you made money from the sales
of bananas?”

his mind. His father-in-law said “Now Nai Hah Tong
just look at all these money and that has been
made by following my directions.” my son I cannot
turn copper into gold, Nai Hah Tong did not answer
because he felt like a fool. His clever wife knelt
before him to show her love and respect. Right
there and there, Nai Hah Tong mixed the banana
fuzz with a little water and carefully molded a statue
tof the old man and said, “I hope that our son and
our son’s sons will treasure it as a heirloom. Each
time they look at it, they will be reminded by my
foolishness nad your father’s wisdom.”
