Introduction
CSR initiatives have been launched in India since the mid-1990. Most big Indian corporations are engaged in some CSR activities.

As is the case in many countries, the private sector is generally more active in this area than the governmental/public sector.
It

is also known as corporate responsibility, corporate citizenship responsible business, sustainable responsible business , or corporate social performance

CSR typically includes issues related to business ethics, community

investment, environment, governance, human rights, the marketplace and the workplace.
concerned about the caring the human beings and its society. plays significant roles in the success and failure of the business.

Eg: IT companies like TCS and Wipro have developed software to help teachers and children in schools across India to further the cause of education

The challenge of corporate social responsibility in India:


In India, over time, the expectations of the public has

grown enormously with demands focusing on poverty alleviation, tackling unemployment, fighting inequality or forcing companies to take affirmative action.
In India public sector companies can spend up to 5% of

their profits on CSR activities

Forms of CSR differ according to the country or

region.
In India, CSR has evolved to encompass employees,

customers, stakeholders and notions of sustainable development or corporate citizenship.

The Indian corporate sector spent US$ 6.31 billion on social expenditure

during 2007-08.

Bharat Petroleum and Maruti Udyog were ranked as the best companies in

India.

India was ranked fourth in the list, according to social enterprise CSR Asia's Asian Sustainability Ranking (ASR), released in October 2009.

Mostly CSR activities spread in 20 states and

Maharashtra gaining the most from them. About 36 per cent of the CSR activities are concentrated in the state, followed by about 12 per cent in Gujarat, 10 per cent in Delhi and 9 per cent in Tamil Nadu.(industry body)
In 2009, the government made it mandatory for all

public sector oil companies to spend 2 per cent of their net profits on corporate social responsibility.

CSR CEES
Formed in 2006 by columbia university faculity of

arts and science. Companies should participate in this and promote economic growth. Is CSR CEES good idea???????

Some suggestion for Indian companies


Companies should spend at least 0.2% of its sales on

CSR activities. Companies should also follow Global Reporting Initiative guidelines by publishing a separate CSR report annually.
