Problem Set 1 Textbook Reading Chapter 1, Sections 1.4, 1.6; 1.5 will be covered in lab.
August 24, 2008 Textbook Problems 1.23, 1.25, 1.27, 1.31, 1.45, 1.49, 1.51
1. Four metal spheres all had the same mass but different diameters. They were made of different metals with densities 19.3 g/cm3 (gold), 10.5 g/cm3 (silver), 2.70 g/cm3 (aluminum), and 7.80 g/cm3 (iron). Order the metal spheres from smallest diameter to largest diameter, given Vsphere = 4/3r3, and diameter d = 2r. Show your work, and be sure to include the units for each conversion.
4 2. You feel a bit feverish and take your temperature with a lab thermometer marked in Kelvin. It reads 310 K. What is your temperature, in Fahrenheit? Show your work, including all units.
3. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt won a gold medal in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games for running the 200-meter race in 19.30 seconds. What was his average speed in miles per hour (mph)? Show your work, including all units.
6 4. A 0.025 dm3 portion of an unknown liquid had a mass of 21967.5 mg. A chemistry handbook lists the density of benzene at 15 C as 0.8787 g/mL. Is the calculated density in agreement with the tabulated value for benzene? You must show your work in order to receive credit.
