2 Application of the Principle of Air Pressure

1. The figure above shows a bicycle pump being used to pump air into a tyre.
Compare the air pressure at P and at Q when the handle is pushed and pulled in the
directions shown. Explain the differences in the air pressure.
(a) Push: ___________________________________________________________

(b) Pull: ____________________________________________________________

2. Explain in terms of air pressure why the above warning is necessary.

1. (a) Pressure at Q is greater than pressure at P.

The air in Q is compressed. The decrease in volume causes the air pressure to
increase.
(b) Pressure at Q is less than pressure at P.
The air in Q expands. The increase in volume causes the air pressure to decrease.
2. The aerosol can contains a propelling agent at high pressure. Even though the
contents of the can have been used up, some of the propelling agent remains in the
can at high pressure. Heat will cause the pressure to increase further and the can
may explode.
