When the tide is out you can see their nest. Some of the ants work quickly to repair the damage the tide has caused. They repair collapsed entrances and clear blocked tunnels. Other ants search for food delivered by the tide. They cross stretches of water by dancing or jumping, and some times they actually swim. Because the tide

has washed away their chemical trails the ants dont know where their territory is. If they see a stranger, they ask, Who are you? Where did you come from?. Sometimes they have to fight to settle problems between ants from different nests. But there is a bigger problem for all the ants. When the tide starts to come back in, they must return to the safety of their nest. They move all their eggs and young to water tight chambers that will not be flooded. Then they all wait for the tide to go out again.
