What is Project-Based Learning?

When you hear the word Project youre probably thinking more homework to pile on at home. Thats not the case. All projects will be done in class. Students will participate in projects that involve math, language arts, fine arts, geography, science and technology. This style of teaching is called Project-Based learning. It is designed to have students answer a question or solve a problem and reflect on the types of learning and work people do in the everyday world. Finally, this learning provides a way to integrate technology into our curriculum.

Whats the Role of the Students?

My students will be given detailed instructions for each project assigned throughout the year. Each project comes with a checklist that the students are responsible for. Next, students will be placed in small groups of 3 or 4 students per group. This creates an environment for students to encourage one another and learn to become a self-manager. During their group time students will make predictions, do research, ask questions and come up with conclusions. Within their groups they will work together, share ideas and come up with the best result.

Why Project-Based Learning?

The purpose of Project-Based learning is to teach students a number of skills such as technology, communication, organization, research, reflection, group participation and leadership skills.

Benefits:
Gets students excited about their learning Helps students dig deeper into a topic and retain what they learned. Teaches students to take imitative in their learning. Improves social and collaborative skills. Develops life skills and self-management skills.

How PBL will be used?

I have created a class wiki for my students that will help them find information on their assigned projects. Students also will be using computers, podcasts and video presentations. This helps students to gain like skill that will help them throughout Middle School, High school, College and even life after College.
