The following is the Chesterfield County Public School Job Description for the
Library Media Specialist. I found the description to be very thorough, but there
were a few changes I would like to make.
General Description:
The library media specialist provides instructional leadership for the
teaching of information literacy skills, develops and maintains a media center
collection rich in both print and non-print materials, and manages the media
center as a flexible, multi-tasked learning environment.
It is essential that the library media specialist collaborate with school
faculty and administrators to develop a program that supports the
instructional curriculum.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of teaching and
learning.
Knowledge of current practices in library media.
Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals for students.
Demonstrated ability to manage print, non-print and electronic collection of
curricular support materials and equipment.
Demonstrated ability to prepare and monitor departmental budget.
Demonstrated ability to provide work direction to others.
Ability to collaborate with other instructional personnel.
Ability to communicate instructional goals to others effectively, orally and in
writing.
Demonstrated skills in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution,
interpersonal relationships, and planning.
The original description states that the media specialist will develop a
program to support instructional curriculum. I would add that the LMS will
also develop goals, policies and procedures that aid in curriculum instruction.
The LMS will also attend policy meetings, be involved in decision-making, and
promote the library program to the administration.
The original states that the LMS should have knowledge of current practices
in library media. I would add that the LMS will continue to stay current on
these practices and implement them in the library media center.
The LMS should initiate collaboration with other instructional personnel.
The LMS should regularly promote the media center’s impact on student
learning.
