Thermal optimisation at a methanol plant To apply pinch-point analysis to a methanol plant to determine if it is operating with optimal energy use, and if not, determine optimisation measures and conduct cost/benefit analyses for each proposal.

Gather necessary data for the most recent 12 months as a basecase. Conduct pinch-point analysis, possibly using software. Develop strategies to improve the plants energy performance if needed. Economic evaluation of proposed strategies. Statement on the plants current level of thermal optimisation. Feasibility study for any proposed improvements.

Pinch-point analysis from first principles and possibly using simulation software. Data gathering, possibly from plants DCS system and archived data. Rough commercial quotations on any equipment required to implement improvements.

Cooperation from the plants.

Socio-economic impact Indicate the expected benefits to be derived and impact on society. Savings in primary-energy terms (i.e. natural gas) and improvement of that resources R/P ratio. Possible increased capacity of the plants with relatively little investment.
