1. Introduction
Introductions in reports have three main functions:
- making the purpose of the document clear
- explaining the scope of the document (what it does or does not cover and in what sequence).
- preparing the reader for the contents, giving a framework on which to build an understanding of
the document and sometimes providing a roadmap to the content.

The GA5 assignment will include the following:

- Explain the purpose of the document
The report aims to outline the application of computer-aided design software used to perform
part of the design work in this project, how the software was implemented, and a summary of
the results obtained.
- Explain the scope of the document
Specifically, the following aspects were implemented using the software: plant-wide and unit-
specific material and energy balances, optimum operating conditions of at least one unit, the
design of at least one unit, sensitivity studies, and estimation of capital and operating costs.
- Preparing the reader for the contents:
Explain the principles upon which the computer-aided process design software operates and
how they will be implemented in this report. Explain any concepts and terminology that the
reader will need to understand. What are the different functions that it can perform? How are
those functions achieved? Point to helpful supporting and reading material for the reader to
read the theory further. This improves the credibility and readability of your document.
- Ending the introduction
End the introduction by outlining the aims and objectives and its significance to your project.

MARKING CRITERIA
Demonstrate skilful ability to describe and explain engineering tools' principles behind and
applicability.

2. Modelling and Simulation Procedure

This section is strictly for explaining the step-by-step method used to achieve a particular design or
research objectives. You may use flow type or any other diagrams where necessary. Supply
references where necessary to enable the reviewer to verify your method and sources. Your method
must be written such that any other reader can easily follow it and obtain the same results that you
did. In this section, do not diverge and discuss other than the materials used and the methods.

The GA5 Assignment will consist of the following:

1. The process modelling software: Aspen Plus
Name and describe the tool you will use to develop a process model and perform process
simulations. Give any other information about its identity. In principle, how does it work?
What are the different functions that it can perform?
2. Process modelling and simulation using Aspen Plus:
Explain the steps that must be taken to develop a process model using Aspen Plus. How is the
simulation and process sensitivity carried out?
3. Illustrations:
Figures and diagrams are essential to give clarity to your explanation. You may show
illustrations of the process model, a stream table sample, and any other diagrams you see fit.
4. Modification from a generic process:
Explain the steps that you took to develop your process model. In your case, you adopted a
generic process model that was developed for you, but you modified it to represent your
version of the problem.
Demonstrates skilful ability to identify and use the most relevant software facilities for a range
of engineering activities.

3. Results
Results must be presented unambiguously, using tables, graphs and diagrams as much as possible.
Any explanation in this section must be to explain the understanding of the data presented. Do not
give your interpretation of the data in this section. The default data precision at this engineering
design level is 3 significant figures only. Bulky and repetitive data must be placed in the Appendix,
with only a sample shown here for clarity.

For the GA5 Assignment, the results section will consist of the following:
1. A final modified process flow model with a detailed description of the modifications
implemented.
2. Clear explanation of the selection of the thermodynamic method.
3. The stream table was modified to show all the process parameters required to verify material
and energy balance calculations.
4. A summary table of the results from each major process unit.
5. A summary table of process utilities is required.
Results of the following
6. Capital costs of equipment
7. Operational costs
8. Sensitivity analysis (give one example).
9. Optimization of a processing unit (give one example).

Demonstrate skilful ability to use engineering tools.

4. Discussion
In this section, discuss your interpretation of the data you presented in the Results section above
sequentially. Here, you may use references to support your interpretation.

For the GA5 Assignment, the discussion section may consist of the following:
1. Were there any problems of the convergence of your modified process model? How well does
it represent the actual process? What other issues arose in the modelling process that are of
interest?
2. Thermodynamic method: How well-suited do you think the thermodynamic method was to
your system? Are your results satisfactory? Do you suspect any difficulty could have arisen
using your chosen thermodynamic method?
3. The stream table: What features are interesting in your stream table, process unit or utility
data?
You may also discuss the following results:
Capital costs of equipment, Operational costs, Sensitivity analysis (give one example), and
Optimization of a processing unit (give one example).
Demonstrate skilful ability to evaluate the limitations of tools and discuss the assumptions.

5. Conclusion/recommendations
This is not a summary of what was done. Rather it is a statement of the outcomes of your application
of the computer aided design software. This should be a well-considered evaluation of the outcomes
of the work carried out and its significance.

6. REFERENCES
All the references used must be listed here. Use a referencing tool such as Mendeley.

7. Appendices
All bulky data, graphs, or repetitive procedures and results must be placed here. These must not
bulk-up the main body of work unnecessarily.
