Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Left untreated, it can progress to myxedema coma, a life-threatening complication where very low thyroid levels cause decreased functioning of multiple organ systems. Myxedema coma requires emergency treatment in an intensive care unit with thyroid hormone replacement, warming, treatment of infections, and careful monitoring.
