Functioning of Public Sector Banks (PSBs), is at a relative disadvantage when compared to the private sector, which is offering state-of-the-art facilities such as ATMs, doorstep banking, banking on phone, internet banking, core banking etc. PSBs also suffer from huge costs of labor and low levels of automation. This apart, the problems which have assumed enormous proportion today as far as Public Sector banks concerned are ballooning NPA levels, declining margins, poor credit off-take, high 2

overheads, and lack of good quality assets. But at this juncture we have to accept that the number of branch network offered by public sector banks cannot be matched with other sectors.

Methodology This article is an attempt to study the financial performance of Indian private sector bank and rank them based on each variable for the period of study. A consolidate ranking is also calculate. This is calculated by taking the average of the three years rank and once again ranking them based on average. To analyze the financial performance variables like Business per employee, return on assets, profit per employee, capital adequacy, credit deposit ratio, operating profit and percentage of net Non performing asset to net advance are taken for analysis. Data are collected from secondary sources like RBI bulletin and other web site relating to banking industry. Data were collected for a period of three years (2003-2004, 2004-2005, and 2005-2006) from all Indian private sector banks. Analysis The following are the outcome of the analysis. 1. The ratio return on assets is used to measure the profitability of the banks. During the year 2003-2004 SBI commercial and international bank ranks first with 3.9% followed by Karur Vysya Bank Ltd., and Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd., The least performer during 2003-2004 was Centurion Bank Ltd which was -3.16% During the year 2004-2005 the best performer in terms of return on assets can be assigned to Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd., followed by Tamilnad Mercantile Bank and Indusind bank in second and third position respectively. Development Credit Bank Ltd., with a negative return on assets of 3.38% ranks at the end. In case of the year 2005-2006 Yes bank has got the first rank and Tamilnad mercantile bank has retained its position of second rank. Development Credit bank ranks the last with a negative return on assets of 2.01% 2. To measure the efficiency of the employee working in bank we can use profit per employee as a tool. During the year 2003-2004 SBI Commercial & International bank Ltd., ranks first with a profit per employee of Rs. 17.12 lakhs. During this

period The Sangli Bank Ltd., rank the least with Rs. 0.62 lakhs. During the year 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 ICICI Bank Ltd., ranks first with a profit per employee of Rs. 11 lakhs and Rs. 10 lakhs respectively. The SBI Commercial & International Bank Ltd., which ranked first during the year 2003-2004, has gone down in ranking to 26th position with a negative profit per employee of Rs. 9.73 lakhs. During this period the Development Credit Bank Ltd., has the lowest rank. During the year 2005-2006 Yes bank has gained to 2nd position from 23rd position. Development Credit Bank Ltd., rank the last with a loss per employee of Rs. 7 lakhs. 3. In terms of operating profit, ICICI Bank Ltd. Ranks first all the years of study. During the year 2003 2004, The Ganesh Bank of Kurundwad Ltd., ranks least with the operating profit Rs. 1.97 Crores. During the years 2004-2005 and 20052006 Development Credit Bank Ltd., has incurred a operating loss of Rs. 4.12 crores and 19.67 crores respectively and has been dragged to last rank. 4. Business per employee is also a tool to measure the efficiency of the employee of the banks, it is calculated by dividing the aggregate of total deposit raised and total advances distributed in a particular year by the number of employees. UTI Bank Ltd., Indusind Bank and ICICI Bank Ltd., dominates by gaining top rank during the period of study. Nainital Bank Ltd., The Ganesh Bank of Kurundwad Ltd and The Sangli bank Ltd are at the least positions during the period of study. 5. Capital adequacy ratio is calculated by dividing the capital (Tier I and Tier II) by risk weighted assets. Equity capital and Free reserves come under the category of Tier I capital. Tier II capital consists of Debts. The Current capital adequacy norm fixed by RBI is 8% with effect from March 31, 1996.Higher the ratio the banks are in a comfortable position to absorb losses. From the table v we infer that SBI commercial & international bank Ltd. ranks first with high capital adequacy ratio in all years of study. During the year 2004 2005 The Ganesh Bank of Kurundwad Ltd and The United western Bank Ltd., are the banks which fall below the standard of 8%. Similarly, The United western Bank Ltd. is also below the standard with a negative ratio during the year 2005 -2006.

6. Credit deposit ratio is a tool used to study the liquidity position of the bank. It is calculated by dividing the cash held in different forms by total deposit. A high ratio shows that there is more amounts of liquid cash with the bank to met its clients cash withdrawals. We can find from table VI, banks like ICICI bank Ltd, Yes Bank and Ing Vysya Bank maintain a high ratio during the period of study. The Bank of Rajasthan Ltd., has maintained a least ratio during all years of study. 7. Net NPA as a percentage of Net advances is used to study the quality of the assets of the bank. From the table VII we can observe that SBI Commercial & International Bank Ltd., ranks first , second and third position during the years 2003- 2004, 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. The Ganesh Bank of Kurundwad Ltd., Western Union Bank Ltd., and Development Credit bank plays a predominant position. Kotak Mahindra bank Ltd., HDFC bank Ltd., have taken up the least position during the period of study.

The bank which performs least is Development Credit Bank Ltd. 2. From the analysis we can come to a conclusion that UTI bank Ltd., employees generate more business. 3. We can see from the table III that ICICI Bank employees are those who generate more profit. Similarly the operating profit is the highest among all private sector banks. 4. SBI Commercial & International Bank Ltd. is the organization which maintains the highest capital adequacy ratio during all years of study. 5.
