Standards: Include content area and ISTE NETS for Students standards. NCTE: Students read a wide range of print and non-print texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works. Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics). Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g., spelling and punctuation), media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and non-print texts. ISTE NETS: Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media.

Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students: locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media and evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.

Lesson Objective(s): Students will: Be able to identify seven poetic devices. Analyze pop song lyrics for these devices. Use the internet to search, on their own, other lyrics that use their given device and determine how it is used effectively.
1

Discuss with their group their findings and choose one to share with the class.

Introduce the Learning Activity: At the beginning of the lesson I will verbally introduce students to our poetry unit and will briefly explain what we will be doing during class while addressing the goal list I will write on the board To motivate them for their activity, students will be allowed to search music lyrics of their own liking (as long as it is appropriate to share with the class).

Provide Information: All definitions, notes, activities and resources will be provided in the Prezi presentation which students can access while in class as well as outside of class.

Provide Practice: Students will search lyrics of their own for their give device. They will first search on their own, write a sentence or two explanation/analysis of their findings then share it with their group. After the group has chosen one lyric, they will present it with the explanation to the class.

Provide Knowledge of Results: If student shave accurately identified their device, I will commend them. If not, I will ask if they need assistance and recommend they keep searching. While students are working I will walk around to see that students are staying on task and ask how they are doing and if they need help.

Review the Activity: To review, I will ask students to (without help of their notes/Prezi) to provide an explanation of each device and how they contribute to poetry.

Method of Assessment: At the end of the Poetry unit students will be given an exam where they will be asked to analyze a poem(s) for a number of poetic devices and explain how they are used effectively. The seven devices covered today will all be present on the exam.

EDU 5170 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY I In-Class 20-Minute Technology Integrated Lesson Directions for In-Class 20-Minute Technology Integrated Lesson: Teach a portion (20-minutes) of the technology-integrated lesson that you created (above) to your classmates. Focus on a concept or skill in your content specialty area that is supported by the use of hardware and/or software. During your 20 minutes, be sure to have your classmates do a hands-on activity with the technology. Do not just lecture. *Note: Do not make the emphasis of the lesson a "how-to" with technology, keep the emphasis on the content area. You may want to create and use a brief PowerPoint presentation in order to introduce/contextualize your lesson for the class. The presentation will also help you to address portions of the lesson that you will not be able to teach in 20 minutes.
