The Experiment
When we launched The Experiment in early 2009, we explained our
name with this motto: Because every book is a test of new ideas.
Since then, we’ve been thrilled to see how the new ideas in our
books have caught on. Most notably, Forks Over Knives: The Plant-
Based Way to Health (see page 12) is our first #1 New York Times best-
seller! A tie-in to the feature documentary Forks Over Knives, it is
inspiring more people than ever before to seek out the many health
benefits of a whole-foods, plant-based diet.
With this Spring 2012 frontlist, our eight new titles (previewed
opposite)—introduce us to ideas, events, and new ways of doing things
that, even when rooted in the past, will contribute to a saner, healthier,
more informed future—one where even more of us may enjoy the health
benefits of a Plant-Powered Diet and dine on delicious Artisanal Gluten-
Free Cooking, and where parents who are Learning to Bake Allergen-
Free have exactly the crash course they need. A future that’s more
fun for babies (and their parents) because of The Baby-Led Weaning
Cookbook, and more inclusive and fair thanks to The Essential Guide
to Gay and Lesbian Weddings. A future where each of us can gain a
Gluten-Free Edge, be a Natural Navigator, and be fully prepared to
appreciate the Transit of Venus on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.
We hope you enjoy and learn from these books as much as we’re
enjoying working with their authors to bring them into the world.

Hundreds of thousands of people caught the 2011 docu-
mentary Forks Over Knives, and more and more are talk-
ing about and embracing its core message: A fully plant-
based diet can improve physical fitness, weight, blood sugar
and cholesterol levels, lifestyle, and overall health—and help
prevent or even reverse diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
The companion book, Forks Over Knives: The Plant-Based
Way to Health, zoomed onto the New York Times bestseller
list, where it hit #1.
Now Forks Over Knives—A Year of Meals offers 365 all-
new recipes–just what new adopters of the whole-foods, plant-
based diet are seeking. Longtime chef and cooking teacher Del
Sroufe, who contributed recipes to the first book, crafts eclec-
tic, global, low-fat, and often gluten-free dishes that are easy to
make from whole, unrefined plant foods like grains, legumes,
fruits, and vegetables.
For everyone looking to cut out animal products, refined
oils, and processed foods—and to eat a diet rich in whole,
healthy plants—here are recipes for everyday classics like Mac
and Cheese and Baked Ziti and for festive, holiday-ready dish-
es like Chard and Bean Stuffed Delicata Squash. This cook-
book will prepare readers to cook the plant-based way every
day—all through the year.

The Lady and the Peacock charts Nobel Peace Prize win-
ner Aung San Suu Kyi’s transformation to leader of the
largest popular revolt in Burmese history, her fifteen years
under house arrest, and her continuing work to change her
country’s politics and ethics.
Suu Kyi is a celebrated political hero in a country long
plagued by internal struggles, human rights violations, and rigid
military regimes maintained by fraudulent elections. Recently
released from over 15 years under house arrest, she is now
poised on the cusp of political office—standing for a seat in
Parliament on April 1st.
In writing this book, longtime foreign correspondent Peter
Popham draws on five years of research, including several un-
dercover visits to Burma and two meetings with Suu Kyi her-
self. He also includes intimate, revealing excerpts from Suu
Kyi’s personal assistant’s diary, printed for the first time in The
Lady and the Peacock. Today, as Suu Kyi stands on the brink of
entering the political mainstream, this book reveals the secrets
of her mental strength and her powerful bond with the people
of Burma.

eating: A complete program that starts today
Hundreds of studies lead to this one conclusion: The
healthiest diet on the planet is a plant-based diet. Plant-
based eating has been linked to abundant health benefits, in-
cluding increased lifespan, a lower risk of heart disease and
cancer, and better brain health. Now, for everyone from omni-
vores who want to cut back on meat and eat more vegetables,
to vegans looking to benefit even more from the healthiest
plant foods, The Plant-Powered Diet meets all readers where
they are, explains the dramatic benefits of eating more plants,
and provides an all-in-one guide to re-engineering one’s diet,
day by day.
Sharon Palmer, a nationally recognized nutrition ex-
pert and editor of the respected wellness newsletter Envi-
ronmental Nutrition (circulation about 80,000), gives read-
ers the low-down on nutrient-packed plant proteins, whole
grains, vegetables, fruits, and plant fats—as well as herbs,
spices, chocolate, coffee, tea, and wine. Then she ex-
plains exactly how to take the “powerful plants plunge,” with
a realistic 14-day plan guiding readers through the super-
market, the kitchen, making school lunches, ordering in
restaurants, healthy on-the-go eating, exercise, and more—
culminating with 75 original recipes for every meal, all with
complete nutritional data.

hailed as “a great primer on how the
forces of nature affect the landscapes”
Before GPS, before the compass, and even before cartography,
humankind was navigating. A windswept tree, the depth of a puddle,
or a trill of birdsong could point the way home—and, for the alert trav-
eler, they still can. Whether you’re exploring in the mountains or on
lunch break, natural navigation can keep you on course and alert to
the wonders of the natural world. Adventurer and navigation expert
Tristan Gooley unlocks the directional clues hidden in the sun, moon,
stars, clouds, weather patterns, lengthening shadows, changing tides,
plant growth, and the habits of local wildlife.
Enriched by helpful illustrations, and filled with navigational anec-
dotes collected across centuries, continents, and cultures, The Natural
Navigator proves that anyone with a curious mind can still find south
by looking at the moon—and find adventure in their own backyard.
“Before GPSes, people navigated by the stars, the wind, and
shadows on the ground. Tristan Gooley . . . shows how it’s
done in The Natural Navigator . . . This fascinating book is
flled with surprising facts.” —Washington Post

A visually spectacular guide to the

Venus’s rare transits across the Sun—
the perfect companion to the transit on
June 5, 2012 (the last one until 2117!)
A transit of Venus is one of the rarest and most historically sig-
nificant planetary alignments—since the invention of the telescope
in 1608, there have been only seven. A must-have for all sky-watchers,
Transit of Venus is packed with scientific and historical context—for
example, astronomers calculated the distance from Earth to the Sun
by studying the 1769 transit, which Captain Cook famously sailed to
uncharted Tahiti to observe. Here also is an unsurpassed breadth of
visual material: NASA photographs of Venus, illustrated observations
of earlier transits, and rarely published images of the instruments and
expeditions made to study them. With this book, the grandeur and his-
tory of transits will be accessible to everyone interested in the cease-
less, wondrous movements of the planets in our solar system.
“Everyone should read Nick Lomb’s fascinating book, which
beautifully and dramatically highlights both the history and
scientifc importance of the transit of Venus.”

The frst book on gaining an edge in life and in
sports by going gluten-free—for both those who
eat gluten-free out of necessity and those who
choose to for the performance boost
Number one world-ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic
has attributed his phenomenal rise and string of major victories
(including Wimbledon and the Australian and U.S. Opens in
2011 alone) in part to his gluten-free diet—highlighting just how
beneficial eliminating gluten can be for athletic performance.
Now, with a growing roster of professional and amateur
athletes eating gluten-free (including some who can eat gluten
but choose to go without), endurance athlete and author
Bronski and nutrition therapist Jory—both of whom have celiac
disease—present a complete guide to gluten-free nutrition and
training for peak performance.
Grounded in cutting-edge research and practical experi-
ence, The Gluten-Free Edge covers all the essentials of gluten-
free nutrition: how to fuel up on high-octane foods to optimize
performance and recovery, how gluten can impede athletic per-
formance and overall fitness, and how a gluten-free diet can
reduce inflammation and smooth digestion. They cover how to
deal with being “glutened” (accidentally ingesting gluten) and
profile numerous athletes gaining a gluten-free edge. And they
offer 50 power-packed, easy-to-make recipes that will fuel any
athlete, including carb-loaders and smoothie addicts.

Peter Bronski is the coauthor of Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking and
Artisanal Gluten-Free Cupcakes and founder of the blog No Gluten, No Problem.
Despite his celiac disease, he enjoys adventure sports, is a former Xterra off-road

Melissa McLean Jory, MNT, who also has celiac disease,

marriage, the number of couples
seeking wedding advice is growing
 Same-sex marriage is legal in
Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts,
New Hampshire, New York, Vermont,
and Washington DC
The original wedding planner for gays
and lesbians—now updated in light of
recent legalizations of gay marriage—
and as useful, witty and inspiring as ever
Fraught with logistical and social pitfalls, wedding planning is
never easy—but for gay and lesbian couples, it presents unique
challenges. Traditional wedding advice doesn’t address the particular
issues facing same-sex spouses-to-be. With notable foresight, Tess
Ayers and Paul Brown published the first edition of this book in 1994,
when legal same-sex marriage was only a dream. Today, as same-sex
marriage continues its state-by-state march to legality, this updated
edition is more relevant and helpful than ever.
Bursting with real-life anecdotes and surprising history, this user-
friendly guide covers how to share the news, structure a ceremony,
and throw a great party—and tackles tough questions from “Why get
married at all?” to “Which band should we book?” For any couple
seeking an unforgettable wedding, this is the indispensable handbook.
“A beautifully conceived and illustrated book that tackles ev-
ery aspect of the wedding ceremony with humor and pride
. . . as much a statement about gay life as it is a nontraditional
wedding planner.” —San Francisco Chronicle

One of our frst goals when we launched The Experiment in 2009 was to begin publishing books that
would backlist instantly—and the sales of which would help buoy our new enterprise.
As of November 2011, we have been publishing books for two years and two months; we have now
published just over 40 titles. More than half of our books have reprinted at least once, and across all our
books, we’ve reprinted over 50 times in total.
Here are the highlights of our backlist, including the #1 New York Times bestseller Forks Over Knives.

Baby-Led Weaning
THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO INTRODUCING SOLID
FOODS—AND HELPING YOUR BABY TO GROW UP A
HAPPY AND CONFIDENT EATER
Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett
“Nurse Rapley and freelance writer Murkett encourage parents to forgo
the usual baby puree and move straight to whole foods while continuing
to breastfeed primarily after a baby is six months old. Their arguments are
scientifcally sound, especially when it comes to muscle development in the
mouth, and they address the anticipated counterarguments, e.g., the need for
iron-fortifed cereal at six months. If mine were little again, I would defnitely try
this. As long as mom is nursing, who says baby can’t eat lamb chops?”
—Library Journal, starred review
“I recommend this groundbreaking book to every new mother I know. Read it. It
will forever change the way you think about feeding your baby.”
—Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, IBCLC, clinical associate professor
of pediatrics, Texas Tech University School of Medicine

Carole Kramer Arsenault, RN, IBCLC
Foreword by William Camann, MD
“The Baby Nurse Bible is chock-full of the kind of practical and helpful informa-
tion that only an insider like Carole Arsenault would know. This book contains
everything a couple needs to prepare for the adventure of labor and birth.”
—Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom
“The Baby Nurse Bible may look like your typical guide to pregnancy and baby
care, but it’s not. It’s better, flled with well-researched tips . . . that you prob-
ably have not heard before.” —Bay State Parent Magazine
CAROLE KRAMER ARSENAULT, RN, IBCLC, is a nurse, parent educator, certified
lactation consultant, and the founder of Boston Baby Nurses, where her team of nurses of-
fers new parents lactation consulting, daytime visits, and overnight support. Arsenault also
provides lactation consulting at many of Boston’s top birthing hospitals. She lives near Boston
