The Experiment
When we launched The Experiment in early 2009, we explained our
name with this motto: Because every book is a test of new ideas.
Since then, weve been thrilled to see how the new ideas in our
books have caught on. Most notably, Forks Over Knives: The Plant-
Based Way to Health (see page 12) is our first #1 New York Times best-
seller! A tie-in to the feature documentary Forks Over Knives, it is
inspiring more people than ever before to seek out the many health
benefits of a whole-foods, plant-based diet.
With this Spring 2012 frontlist, our eight new titles (previewed
opposite)introduce us to ideas, events, and new ways of doing things
that, even when rooted in the past, will contribute to a saner, healthier,
more informed futureone where even more of us may enjoy the health
benefits of a Plant-Powered Diet and dine on delicious Artisanal Gluten-
Free Cooking, and where parents who are Learning to Bake Allergen-
Free have exactly the crash course they need. A future thats more
fun for babies (and their parents) because of The Baby-Led Weaning
Cookbook, and more inclusive and fair thanks to The Essential Guide
to Gay and Lesbian Weddings. A future where each of us can gain a
Gluten-Free Edge, be a Natural Navigator, and be fully prepared to
appreciate the Transit of Venus on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.
We hope you enjoy and learn from these books as much as were
enjoying working with their authors to bring them into the world.

Before GPS, before the compass, and even before cartography,
humankind was navigating. A windswept tree, the depth of a puddle,
or a trill of birdsong could point the way homeand, for the alert trav-
eler, they still can. Whether youre exploring in the mountains or on
lunch break, natural navigation can keep you on course and alert to
the wonders of the natural world. Adventurer and navigation expert
Tristan Gooley unlocks the directional clues hidden in the sun, moon,
stars, clouds, weather patterns, lengthening shadows, changing tides,
plant growth, and the habits of local wildlife.
Enriched by helpful illustrations, and filled with navigational anec-

June 5, 2012 (the last one until 2117!)
A transit of Venus is one of the rarest and most historically sig-
nificant planetary alignmentssince the invention of the telescope
in 1608, there have been only seven. A must-have for all sky-watchers,
Transit of Venus is packed with scientific and historical contextfor
example, astronomers calculated the distance from Earth to the Sun
by studying the 1769 transit, which Captain Cook famously sailed to
uncharted Tahiti to observe. Here also is an unsurpassed breadth of
visual material: NASA photographs of Venus, illustrated observations
of earlier transits, and rarely published images of the instruments and
expeditions made to study them. With this book, the grandeur and his-
tory of transits will be accessible to everyone interested in the cease-
less, wondrous movements of the planets in our solar system.
Everyone should read Nick Lombs fascinating book, which
beautifully and dramatically highlights both the history and
scientifc importance of the transit of Venus.

Baby-Led Weaning
THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO INTRODUCING SOLID
FOODSAND HELPING YOUR BABY TO GROW UP A
HAPPY AND CONFIDENT EATER
Gill Rapley and Tracey Murkett
Nurse Rapley and freelance writer Murkett encourage parents to forgo
the usual baby puree and move straight to whole foods while continuing
to breastfeed primarily after a baby is six months old. Their arguments are
scientifcally sound, especially when it comes to muscle development in the
mouth, and they address the anticipated counterarguments, e.g., the need for
iron-fortifed cereal at six months. If mine were little again, I would defnitely try
this. As long as mom is nursing, who says baby cant eat lamb chops?
Library Journal, starred review
I recommend this groundbreaking book to every new mother I know. Read it. It
will forever change the way you think about feeding your baby.
