Prof. of English ABSTRACT Equality is the soul of liberty; there is, in fact, no liberty without it. In the patriarchal society, in particular in the underdeveloped countries, women silently suffered with regard to their liberation from religious, legal, economic, sexual oppression and their access to higher education. Indian women are no exception to this. India though it falls under developing countries, women in India suffered emancipation as majority part of India follows patriarchal system and men here dominated women irrespective of their abilities. Woman was considered a supporting hand to man in the Indian tradition though skillful and talented. Woman before getting subjected to suffering, man treats her gently and delicately initially and slowly after earning her confidence as a well-wisher and supporter, overrides her stance and makes her dependent irrespective of her genius. Though woman was capable, yet always behave gently and hence majority of the men take undue advantage of this attitude and override her opinion. At last, only when woman come out of inhibition totally and fight with determination for her rights with competence, equality was given at certain places. Hence, emancipation of the women is the dire need of the hour. The need arises out of biased treatment together with exploitation. R.K. Narayan, one of the founding pillars of Indian writing in English explored theme of women emancipation in his short story Selvi published in the renowned short story collection of Malgudi days. This research paper explores how Selvi silently underwent sufferings and finally liberated from the captivity of Mohan, a representative of patriarchal society and surmounted all problems with courage and lived independently. Key words: Women emancipation, talent, Patriarchal society, Short story, Selvi. *** Dr. Parvathi V.
