ENC 1102 / Character Profile for Casting Williams The Glass Menagerie As a director casting Williams play, you

must complete profiles on the major characters to prepare for auditions. These profiles will help the actors understand the characters and their motivations. (For this exercise, focus on just ONE character.) Profile Amanda, Tom, OR Laura (choose one) in a word-processing document by responding completely to the four sections below. When you are finished, upload the document to Turnitin.

I.

Character traits. (To give actors a sense of the personality and complexity of the character, list as many qualities associated with the character as you can. Note not only traits and qualities identified by the playwright but also those that are revealed through interactions with other characters. Make notes of page numbers where these traits/qualities are revealed.) Tom

Adventurous (pg 1097), Selfish about his desires (pg 1099), Hardworking (pg 1096), Loyal to family (pg 1098) Liar (1093) Addict (pg 1081) sarcastic (pg 1092)

II.

Conflicts motivating character. (List the major problems and/or concerns that drive the character by the end of scene IV.)

Tom wishes to get away from his horrible job making shoes in this small town and see the world. He is the adventurous type, not some stationary spirit. He is compelled to stay there to take care of his mother and sister. Every night, he goes to the movies, lying to both the audience and his family. He is filled with wanderlust, but chained to his mediocre job and the only way he can escape is through his nightly activities and smoking cigarettes

III.

Scene for audition. (Identify a scene, no more than half a page long, that should be used during auditions to cast the part. Obviously, this scene should reflect many of the qualities or traits you think are most representative of the character. Note page numbers and beginning/ending lines, and explain why you think the scene you select is the most useful scene for the audition of the part.)

I like a lot of adventure......... What? (pg 1098) This part in scene four shows multiple qualities of Tom's character in such a short amount of time. It shows his desires and how he portrays them and his quick temper towards the subject of him staying and taking care of his family through the shoe factory job. If

someone could master this page, then that person has a really good chance of mastering Tom's character as a whole.
