The system Our DSpace repository is powered by a separated server just for this job.

The hardware of the server consists of a Intel Xeon dual core central processing unit, model 5110, working each at a ~1.6 Ghz speed, helped by 2 Gb system memory. For the operating system we have chosen the Ubuntu Linux, version 8.04 LTS. The main reasons choosing this system was its cost: it is free, it is very powerful and very stable. The LTS version also means that is has long time support. Installing DSpace The first step to install the DSpace software is to make sure that all the prerequisite software is install or to install them. First of all we need a database that will store our data. The DSpace support by default two database softwares: PostgreSQL open source database available for free and the Oracle Database which also has a free version called Express Edition, which has some limitations compared to the main edition. On our server we are using the free PostgreSQL. We also need to have the Java JDK installed on our server, as well as Apache Maven and Apache Tomcat. All of them are free to download from the internet. If we are using this combination we also need the following packages installed: libpg-java (Postgres JDBC driver), ant-optional. All of thes software and packages can be installed very simple on an Ubuntu system using the command line tools or simply using the Synaptic Package Manager. In none of these cases you don`t have to search the internet for them, the packages are prezent in the operating systems repostiories. Having the system prepared, we can download te DSpace software from its homepage: www.dspace.org. We are currently using the 1.6.0 version, but the latest version available for download is the 1.7.1.
