PBS Process Consultation

PBS Process Consultation is defined as the development of relationships within a PBS Team and correspondingly the school staff that encourages the team and staff to perceive, understand, and act on the process events that occur in the schools internal and external environment affecting positive student behavior management practices. The goal of the process is to improve the educational outcomes for students as defined by the PBS Team and the school staff.

Key Assumption
It is a key assumption underlying PBS Process Consultation that the Team and school staff must learn to understand the student management issues for themselves by sharing in the data development and be actively involved in generating interventions. The reason the Team and staff must be involved is that the data collection process is itself an intervention and any intervention has ultimately to be the responsibility of the staff and be owned by them. When data is collected or surveys conducted, the staff must understand and take responsibility for the decision to conduct these activities.

Process Focus
A primary focus of Process Consultation is to build relationships within a PBS Team and support the Team in determining concrete and specific steps to take to promote positive student management processes. This involves: Building relationships between PBS Team members and the school staff Supporting the PBS Team and school staff to accept and deal with reality Addressing barriers to effective practices Acknowledging that all efforts are equally important All of the above for the PBS Team and school staff to develop insights into what is occurring in their school regarding positive student management

A second area of focus for PBS Process Consultation is to assist the PBS Team in developing, implementing, and supporting a positive student management vision for the school staff that:
Works to support the staff to remain proactive Promotes the staff owning the problems and interventions Supports the staff in understanding the complexity of their

efforts and understanding what
