Explain how you would as a head teacher create a conducive env ironment for decision making process?
Decision is a conscious action from among a well-defined set of often competing alternatives.
Decision making is a cognitive process leading into the selection of a belief or course of action
among several possible alternative options.
A head teacher is the most senior teacher within a school. They are responsible for managing the
school and making sure that everything is running smoothly on a day to day basis.
The head teacher can create a conducive environment for decision making process in a school in
the following ways;
Allowing and encouraging team work and group activities. As a head teacher different
activities can be assigned to members of staff and decisions are made amongst the
members of staff depending on their abilities on a specific activity thus giving a conducive
environment for decision making among the member
Staffing. This refers to selecting and training staff and maintaining favoring conditions of
work for example in the new curriculum a few members of staff can be selected and trained
on how to enhance implication of the new curriculum which will lead to good service
delivery since the members of staff have been trained in a specific area of training
Directing by making decisions and providing alternatives in specific area of concern. For
example, when there's poor performance in the school the head teacher can suggest on the
best ways of improving the performance of the school through providing various
alternatives on which the performance can be improved this will enable members of staff to
make a wide variety of choices thus providing a conducive environment in decision
making.
As the head-teacher, including the rightful stakeholders for the decision making process is
crucial so as to create a conducive environment for sourcing the rightful and reliable data
for best decision making. For instance, the decision to improve the academic performance
of students could attract the inclusion of teachers and heads-of- department, directors-of-
study as well as class teachers and by involving these stake holders, reliable and
dependable information for best decision making will be obtained.
Scheduling data collection arrangements as many as possible could be brilliant idea. This
can be achieved through holding staff meetings, briefings, assemblies and consultations so
as to widen the base for information influx.
Sharing values that emphasize what is important to the school and its staff members of
which values should be based on decision making in both good and tough times.
Planning what to be done and how to do it. As a head teacher staff meeting can be
organized to make planning on the specific area before a final decision is made thus
promoting a conducive environment for decision making in the school.
As the head-teacher, one should accept and learn from the previous mistakes. By so doing,
the school will be more adaptive and resilient under uncertain and changing conditions.
Organize by establishing the structure of the objectives to rely on . This will enable staff
members to have a hint on the decisions to be made in the area of concern there by creating
a conducive environment for decision making among the staff members.
Budgeting that is costing the required resources to implement decision for example in a
school, department teachers may want to conduct practicals hence the head teacher has to
plan appropriately in order to meet the needs of students and teachers there by creating a
conducive environment for decision making.
Provision of freedom to teachers to express their opinion basing on what they think. As
head teacher you should not only base on your own ideas, that is to have a biased mindset
but value the colleagues decisions too, this sends positive signal to them to them that their
efforts are appreciated
Evaluating the decision making process that is both summative and formative evaluation of
process this can be done by trying and testing on what to be decided on before coming up
with final and appropriate decision.
Rendering professional and technical advice, support to teachers who are seeking to
develop their teaching careers because this enables them to develop their skills and talents
in the teaching profession hence becoming more productive.
Regularly updating the members of staff on the progress and challenges encountered in
seeking to achieve set objectives and goals. This is done through continuous
communication. This enables members of staff to remain focused and hard working.
