The Jungle, Upton Sinclair (Chaps. 5 thru 8) Chap. 5: Very quickly, expenses for the new house overwhelm the familys finances, Jurgis says again: I will work harder. Jurgis still cant why other workers at the factory hate their jobs, and he has his first encounter with the union, which, at this point, he has no use for. Antenas is still looking for work. The only job he can find requires him to give 33% of his weekly salary to the man who found the job for him, although he is angered by the arrangement, he takes the job. Once Antenas begins work he finds that unethical and illegal things are happening inside the meatpacking industry. Jurgis also finds that things happen at work that are not quite right. He begins to wonder if the men who hated their jobs may have had a good reason for not liking their jobs. Marija gets a job even though Jurgis initially forbade the idea of her working. She also discovers things she doesnt like about her job. Particularly, that there is no loyalty between employer and employee. Marija has been given the job of a person whod been working hard at the factory for fifteen years, when she missed work for one day, they fired her. Exposure to this level of dishonesty and betrayal from each of the family members has every one worried. Chap. 6: From an old Lithuanian woman, Grandmother Majausszkiene, Jurgis finds out that the home theyve bought is not new, but fifteen years old. And, that they are not the first owners, but the fifth people to try and buy the house. They find out about having to pay interest on the mortgage, again Jurgis says: I will work harder. Ona and the young Stanislovas decide to seek employment, Ona pays to get a job, and Stanislovas lies about his age with the help of a priest to get a job. Grandmother Majausszkiene has lived in neighborhood long enough to see the many families of immigrants come and go, the Germans, the Poles, the Irish, and the Bohemians. She has seen many immigrant families try, but fail to keep up with the house payments. Chap 7: Jurgis and Ona are finally able to marry. The narrative flashback has finally reached the time of the opening chapter. Unfortunately, for the newlyweds times are still rough and getting tougher. Ona & Antenas are constantly getting sick. This leads to Antenas death. Jurgis is too poor to pay for a burial. The winter weather is hard on everyone in Packingtown. A friend of young Stanislovas loses his ears due to frostbite. Stanislovas becomes scared of the cold, and Jurgis has to carry him to work. The narrators story telling portrays a scene in Packingtown where people are seeking escape into alcoholism or slowly dying form the cold. Ironically, the chapter starts out with the happiness of a wedding and ends in debt, death, and despair. Chap. 8: Jurgis is asked to join the union. This time he sees that there may be some value to the idea. He sees the abuses in the industry and decides to join. He also convinces others in his family to join, which restores a sense of hope to the whole family. Jurgis begins to attend the union meetings, he becomes convinced of their efficacy, ultimately the union becomes his passion. One reoccurring theme present in this chapter is that the hopes of love always come in second place to the hard truth of the economic troubles they all face.
