Name of Drug Generic Name: Ampicillin sodium Brand Name: Abacitam Dosage Route Frequency Dosage: 270 mg Route: Intravenous Through Tubing (IVTT) Frequency: Every 6 hours (q6h) Mechanism of Action Bactericida l action against sensitive organisms; inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall, causing cell death Indication Treatment of a variety of infections due to susceptible organisms including biliary tract infections, bronchitis, endocarditis, gastroenteritis, gonorrhea, meningitis & otitis media. Contraindication Hypersensiti vity to penicillins. History of hemorrhagic & GI disease esp ulcerous colitis, regional enteritis or antibioticassociated colitis. Adverse Reaction Mild diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, epigastralgia, cephalea; oral, vaginal & intestinal candidiasis; colitis. Anaphylaxis, serum sicknesslike reaction, skin rash, urticaria or pruritis. Leukopenia or neutropenia, inj site pain, platelet dysfunction, Clostridium difficileassociated Nursing Responsibility
Intervention: Check IV site carefully for signs of thrombosis or drug reaction. Do not give IM injections in the same site; atrophy can occur. Monitor injection site. Administer oral drug on an empty stomach, 1 hr before or 2 hrs after meals with a full glass of water; do not give with fruit juice or soft drinks. Culture infected area before treatment; reculture area if respose is not as expected.
