MAINFRAME

WHAT IS MAINFRAME ?

Mainframe is a High performance Multi User computer system which is the most scalable, available, reliable and secured machine in the world capable of performing some Million Instructions per second. Characteristics of Mainframe:
1) Reliable single-thread performance, which is essential for reasonable operations against a database. 2) Maximum I/O connectivity, which means mainframes excel at providing for huge disk farms. 3) Maximum I/O bandwidth, so connections between drives and processors have few choke-points. 4) Reliability--mainframes often allow for "graceful degradation" and service while the system is running.

Today, mainframe computers play a central role in the daily operations of most of the worlds largest corporations. The mainframe occupies a coveted place in todays e-business environment. In banking, finance, health care, insurance, public utilities, government, and a multitude of other public and private enterprises. The mainframe computer continues to form the foundation of modern business. Mainframe development occurred in a series of generations starting in the 1950s. First generation systems, such as the IBM 705 in 1954 and its successor generation The IBM 1401 in 1959, were a far cry from the enormously powerful and economical machines that were to follow, but they clearly had characteristics of mainframe computer. The IBM 1401 was called the Model T of the Computer business.

The introduction of IBM system/360 in 1964 signalled the start of the third generation. The S/360 was also the first of these computers to use microcode to implement many of these instructions. Microcode or firmware stored micro instructions, not available to users, that provide a functional layer between hardware and software. Architecture of the Mainframe: Each new generation of mainframe computer has included improvements in one or more following areas of the architecture. More and fast processor. More physical memory and greater memory addressing capability. Dynamic capabilities of software. Mainframe: A highly secured computer system designed to continuously run large, mixed workloads at high levels of utilization while meeting user-defined service level objectives. upgrading both hardware and
